Show Notes

It's a dual celebration as Stan and Shen invite in Chad Arnold who celebrated a birthday just before National Comic Book Day this weekend.

He brings his own insights into the comic book collecting world and talks superheroes, movies, and more while Shen sits by. We then have input from friends who selected what superhero they would like to be for a day.

Shen took some ribbing for changing a birthday plan with Chad due to Daily Gazette Game Day with the NY Phoenix on Sunday, May 4, at which the Daily Gazette mascot Newsie will be making an appearance.

Stan caught up with two NY Phoenix All-Stars, Shaudell Millinghaus and Arsenio Arrington to talk about their performance in Maryland, winning the 3-on-3 title and Millinghuas being named All-Star game MVP.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hi, I'm Stan. [00:00:02] Speaker B: And I'm Shen. [00:00:03] Speaker A: And each week we bring you the Stan and Shen Show. And each week we talk about fun things through our travels throughout the capital region. We touch on food, we touch on news, try to touch heavily on good news. And Shen's always available with hot takes. [00:00:19] Speaker B: Yeah. So if you could follow along and listen to us every week on DailyGazette.com or on all major streaming platforms, we'd love to have you join us. [00:00:29] Speaker A: Hello. And how the heck are you? Welcome to the Stan and Chen Show. How's that? [00:00:37] Speaker B: That's good. Okay. [00:00:40] Speaker A: Happy birthday. [00:00:41] Speaker C: Thank you. [00:00:41] Speaker B: Well, it's belated at this point. [00:00:44] Speaker A: It's kind of. Do you want. Do you subscribe to birthday week or like Shannon birthday month? [00:00:51] Speaker C: I usually just do birthday. Yeah, that's pretty much it. [00:00:55] Speaker A: One and done. [00:00:56] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, after 21, it's all, you know, just kind of blends together. So. [00:01:02] Speaker A: So with us, we have. And Shen has talked about this before in a demeaning manner that I call people friends of the podcast. She said, we. We have friends of the podcast. I said, yes, we do. But today, I think today we have the best friend of the podcast in our own Chad Arnold. [00:01:22] Speaker B: Well, he's my best friend. [00:01:24] Speaker A: Right. And you're one half of the podcast. [00:01:30] Speaker B: Hold on. I'm half of the podcast. [00:01:32] Speaker C: Right. [00:01:32] Speaker A: You're one half of the pod. Weren't there three people at the table last night? Didn't Chad's friends take him out for his 30 plus wings? [00:01:42] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:44] Speaker A: So therefore it's not a stretch. I mean, he is a first time guest and he has Stan and Shen swag. [00:01:53] Speaker B: Because you gave it to him. [00:01:55] Speaker A: I did. [00:01:56] Speaker B: Without talking to your partner. [00:01:58] Speaker A: Exactly. So you know what? I'm gonna give you back your investment into the prize. Here you go. Anyway, we are here, we're having a great day because Chad is here. Chad Arnold. So happy birthday again. [00:02:15] Speaker C: Thank you. [00:02:16] Speaker A: Undisclosed number. [00:02:19] Speaker C: 35. Yep. [00:02:20] Speaker A: Okay. [00:02:20] Speaker C: It's 35. [00:02:21] Speaker A: All right. That's a number I would probably still be proud of back in the day. And we had a great time last night. I think we did. [00:02:30] Speaker C: We went to the Rusty Nail in Clifton Park. They took advantage of their birthday special of, I believe it's a free cocktail of some kind, free beverage and popcorn. Drink a number of free wings up to your age. So I got 35 free wings. Went through 25 of them on my own. [00:02:52] Speaker A: Was the final. 25. [00:02:53] Speaker C: It was 25. [00:02:54] Speaker A: Okay, so you muddled. 20 was solid. [00:02:57] Speaker C: 20 was no problem. [00:02:58] Speaker B: No, hold on. 19 was solid 20. He hesitated, and he spoke to us for about two minutes straight before he ate that 20th wing. And then it really just went downhill from there. Okay, so want to make sure we're clear here? [00:03:16] Speaker C: Yeah, it was too many. Whatever the number, it was too many, really. [00:03:20] Speaker B: 25. That's the most struggle I've ever seen. He lost all hope in his eyes, and that was it. [00:03:29] Speaker A: And one of the reasons we brought you on was not only because your birthday. We'd love to have people come in on their birthday because I think that'd be fun. I'd have no problem with that. But one of the reasons we brought in is that Saturday. And how does this work out for you? Because not only is it your birthday this week, but it also is National Comic Book Day. So, like, is that how. When did you realize it was that special? Your week? [00:03:51] Speaker C: So Saturday is Free Comic Book Day. It's an exciting time for a comic book fan such as myself. I think I realized that probably last month. I was actually looking at the calendar. Free Comic Book Day is always the first Saturday in May. But I think this is probably the first time where I looked at him and was like, oh, my birthday is literally, like, right before this. So I think it was about a month ago I realized, like, yeah, this. This is all happening the same week. So maybe for this year I might subscribe to the. The birthday week as opposed to just the birthday day, you know, so. [00:04:26] Speaker A: And the Stan and Shen show channeled your birthday and your hobby, your joy, National Comic Book Day by a visit to Electric City Comics, correct? [00:04:37] Speaker B: Yes, they are. This week's Bisbee feature where we talk to the owner over there who actually used to work for the Gazette at one point as the Chess columnist. [00:04:47] Speaker A: Chess columnist. [00:04:48] Speaker B: Chess. Back when we used to have a columnist for Chess. [00:04:52] Speaker A: That's pretty crazy. [00:04:54] Speaker B: So that was a very long time ago, obviously. And he spoke to us a little bit about sort of what's going on in the industry, which we may tackle in a later their story and more about the business and. And how, you know, what they do there, what they sell there. I was very shocked to see a almost 7 grand comic in the display case. It's not prepared for that. Not my cup of tea, so would never spend seven grand on that. But I can understand why one might. [00:05:28] Speaker A: What would you spend $7,000 on? And it's not Taylor Swift tickets. What's number two? [00:05:36] Speaker B: My student loans. [00:05:40] Speaker C: That's a good investment, actually. Okay. [00:05:43] Speaker A: Not a bill. Not a bill. Not pay off the car. Not pay off the loan, seven grand. What are you gonna do? [00:05:49] Speaker B: Take a vacation. I take a vacation. Like a good vacation. Not the like 1500 I'm trying to put aside for a semi basic vacation. I take it like a good solid. [00:06:00] Speaker A: Would set for seven grand. [00:06:01] Speaker B: Would you fly if seven grand could get me to like Europe for a week? Yes. [00:06:09] Speaker A: Okay. All right, look for that GoFundMe coming soon. Or just email venmo, stan and shen gmail dot com. So, so with National Comic Book Day and we put this out the slack channel at the paper and they put it out on my Facebook page. So our. So what's. Before I get into what superhero you would be, so you can think about it. While we're going into that, what's your plan for National Comic Book Day? [00:06:39] Speaker C: So I'm gonna, I'm gonna hit up a couple comic book stores solo. [00:06:44] Speaker A: Yes, that plan was thwarted. [00:06:47] Speaker C: Yes, I'm gonna go solo. I might start my day at Electric City on Van Ranken Avenue, hit up that store for a little while. Then I'm gonna go up to Boston Spa. Excellent adventures there on the main strip there, Route 50. And then from there, I'm thinking about Earthworld Comics in Albany, which is probably, I think, the biggest comic book store we have in the capital region. Electric City is the oldest, it's true, but not far behind. It is actually Earthworld in Albany there on Central Avenue. Great store. I'm going to go there. Then I'm going to end my day probably at Cross Gates. I'm going to go see the new Marvel movie, Thunderbolts. That's how I'm going to end it. It's a full day. [00:07:40] Speaker A: But you're going to avoid the Con. [00:07:42] Speaker C: I am going to. I'm doing that on principle. I have, I have some thoughts on that. You know, I'm. I love a good comic Con. I've gone to a couple this year already, some smaller ones up in the New England area. Really great time. But I believe Free Comic Book Day is a day that should be devoted to comic book stores. And so to have a convention on the same weekend as Free Comic Book Day, it just really doesn't sit right with me. It kind of bothers me. So I will not be participating in that. Maybe in the fall, because I do one usually in November. Maybe I'll go to that one. But this, this weekend, it's staying away out of principle. Yes. Because, I mean, Free Comic Book Day, it started in, I think, 2002. And it's all about getting people out to local comic book Shops. Right. Because comic book shops are. It's kind of. It's a rough industry. Right. They've certainly had their ups and downs. So the idea was to kind of get people in there and you know, you get some free comics. But these comics are not free for the vendors, the retailers. They still have to pay, right? Correct. So they still have to pay for it. So the idea is to give these away for free while you're there, maybe go through some back issues, buy some additional comments and really support the comic book store. That's really what the day is all about. A lot of times comic book shops have sales, maybe they bring in some artists or some writers to do some sign ins, things of that nature. So it's just a great day for those who like the medium and it's a great way to explore the medium for those who are just looking to kind of get into two comic books. [00:09:11] Speaker A: All right. Just to keep Shen as bored as we can, two thoughts for you. One, where are you on cosplay? [00:09:19] Speaker C: I don't mind it. You know, the one thing that I realized pretty quickly going to my first comic convention is that, you know, all these characters, they mean something to somebody. Right? So if you're, you know, you want to dress up as somebody and you know that makes you happy, that's fine. You know, it doesn't bother me. I myself don't do it. But I've, I've gone to conventions and I've seen some just incredible cosplays. I mean, people who put some really a lot of time and effort into it and you know, if that makes them happy. Awesome. [00:09:51] Speaker A: My favorite, one of my favorite photos actually came out of Comic Con two years ago. Schenectady resident. Full on Darth Maul. I mean, the pain, the body, I can't pull off. Darth Maul. Yeah, he did such a great job. Such a great job. And, and the, the, the intent that goes into it to really pull this off. And there's some things that I have no idea what they are. A lot of Japanese anime that I miss, I missed. Wasn't part of my deal back in the day. But yeah, I like it. I appreciate anyone. All forms of art. All forms of art. And finally, National Comic Book Day. What's your get? What's the one comic book that you would like to get your hands on, period? The end. No price. Just. I would like to tell people I own this. [00:10:57] Speaker C: For me, it'd be a. I have two. One is the first edition of Invincible. That's a. You might Know, the Amazon show. It's a really fantastic series on Amazon. But before that, it was a comic book written by Robert Kirkman, who was the creator of the Walking Dead. He's had a lot of success. This incredible storytelling that is right now my dream. I mean, I. [00:11:22] Speaker A: What's that pegged at, right? [00:11:23] Speaker C: It's. It's probably over a thousand dollars. [00:11:25] Speaker A: Oh, just over a grand? [00:11:26] Speaker C: Yeah, I think so. I think it varies because that's. [00:11:29] Speaker A: You go on vacation for 6,000. We got a thousand for Chad's comic book. [00:11:35] Speaker B: It's the Stan and Shen show. The Stan Chen and Chad show. [00:11:41] Speaker A: Okay. Bestie's getting booted. What? What's number two get? [00:11:47] Speaker C: I was a little late to this one, but it's the original ultimate spider man number one, first edition, written by Brian Michael Bendis, illustrated by Mark Bagley. That's kind of. I believe it started in the early 2000s. And that's kind of a retelling of the spider man story. Kind of give nice jumping on spot for readers. I read that probably a year or two ago, and I was really just, you know, I loved it. Who doesn't love Spider Man? But to have a nice, you know, compact. Here's where you can begin. Don't have to worry about the thousand other issues that have come out that make it so complicated and weigh things down. That often happens with comic books. That was a nice little jumping on. And plus, Brian Michael Bendis can't go wrong. [00:12:36] Speaker A: What's the tag on that? [00:12:37] Speaker C: I don't know. Actually, I've seen one. It was a first edition. It was a German copy. And that was for $300. [00:12:47] Speaker A: Okay. [00:12:47] Speaker C: And I put that back. And then about an hour later, I was like, I gotta go get that. And it was gone. [00:12:54] Speaker A: So 300 was a sharp price. [00:12:55] Speaker C: Yeah, 300 was like, I don't want to spend 300 on that. Then I was like, oh, no, I want that. I should have done it. And here we are. [00:13:01] Speaker A: All right. And again, you can venmo the stan and shenmail.com if we want to start a gofundme for Chad for his comic book. So to bring Shen back into this as she's twirling her hair, enjoying this so much. Who is your superhero? And again, we know it's gonna be a hot take. And I can't wait for this. [00:13:26] Speaker B: Well, I think when we put it out there, I told everybody they can't choose any of the Supermans, because if you just go off of power, you want power, Ultimately power. Then everybody's Gonna choose Superman. Any freaking form of Superman from any of the comic books that's gonna be picked if you just go based off of having power. So taking him out of the equation, I'm going to pick Captain America because I'm a huge Marvel fan. Although I don't read the comics, they don't come at me in the comment section. But I did like the Marvel movies. You can ask Jack. We talked about this. Love me some Chris Evans. So I'm going with that. But my number two has got to be Black Widow. And for reasons of. I just like that she doesn't really have powers per se, except for the power of persuasion. Like, she can fight, and she's very persuasive. She uses her mind to get what she wants. And I also, as we discussed, I like Scarlett Johansson's take on the character and the fact that she, in a recent interview, actually was discussing how the attire that Black Widow wore changed over the years as she developed the character more. And it went from being less about this character who, you know, was very, very much displayed for her body in ways, you know, became more of this character who, like in the. Especially in the Marvel movies. You see, this is, like, leaned on by other people in the movies. And I like that. I like that. That's what Scarlett Johansson has turned that into. So those would be my one, two. Taking out Superman. [00:15:07] Speaker A: Okay, so again, we put this out on the Slack channel. We put it out on Facebook, shared it with a bunch of people. So here's the list for more friends of the podcast. [00:15:20] Speaker B: Okay. [00:15:22] Speaker A: Bill Trojan, Fulton County Area News. [00:15:25] Speaker B: Batman gonna be a lot of Batman. [00:15:27] Speaker A: I think there's gonna be some Batman. [00:15:29] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:15:30] Speaker A: Our friend. Yes. Will Springstead was a victim to the Shannon edict that you can't be that you. That you can't be Superman. [00:15:43] Speaker B: Yes. He had originally chosen a version of Superman. I think it was Superman, the ultimate or something like that, Remembering correctly. But yes, taking. I need backups. Otherwise a lot of people are going to choose super Superman. [00:15:59] Speaker A: Okay, so then some of the people had some fun with this, and I'm just pulling up one because it's a little bit lengthy. So Jeff Wilkin came in and I want to see how you feel about this, Chad. Jeff Wilkin, retired friend of the podcast, still writing at least two times a week for the Daily Gazette. [00:16:23] Speaker B: No one ever really retires here. Correct. [00:16:25] Speaker A: That's why I came down here. I can retire and keep on working. Green Lantern, the obvious choice. Not only the coolest name in comics, but with green, black and White. Also the coolest outfit. And with a cosmically charged ring powered by imagination. A great tool for any creative writer. Flight, another plus. All this in a cool rhyming oath, too. Chet Arnold. Go. [00:16:52] Speaker C: Green Lantern is a great character. I would ask which Green Lantern. Right. Are we talking about Alan Scott? We talking about Hal Jordan? Jon Stewart, Kyle Rayner. Right. [00:17:04] Speaker A: I'm great. Hal Jordan, Jeff's age and etc. And, you know, again, if there's one thing that Ryan Reynolds shouldn't have done. [00:17:13] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:17:13] Speaker A: Was Green Lantern. Yeah, There. But. But Will Springstead, I think he would. [00:17:19] Speaker B: Disagree with you because he met his wife on that movie. [00:17:21] Speaker C: That's true, actually. Yeah. No, that's true. That's true. [00:17:24] Speaker B: I don't think he regrets that one bit. [00:17:28] Speaker A: Okay. The voice of reason. Will Springstead came in with Superman, was quickly swatted down with the kryptonite Hand of Shen. So he had to pick up somebody else. He went with the. The late, great Hong Kong Phooey. Groovy style and power that won't stop. Which is more Saturday morning character than superhero. Eden Stratton. Nice selection with Wonder Woman. They said, smart, tough, and who can beat the lasso of truth? So there's a lot. I think there's some journalism in there. [00:18:03] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:18:03] Speaker A: For their selection. [00:18:04] Speaker B: Agree with that one. [00:18:06] Speaker A: John Norris also weighed in with Hong Kong Phoe Se from our southern region selected Batman. And for a villain, he. He picks Deathstroke. We liked Amira's choice, Poison Ivy. And her statement was, well, she's kind of right. We are screwing up the Earth. So Amira's like, yeah, I like Poison Ivy. Apparently a huge Batman fan. Someone we have not had on the show yet. Bob O'Leary, vice president of our advertising department, Batman. [00:18:38] Speaker B: Apparently, he could barely finish the question. He was like, I'm Batman. [00:18:41] Speaker A: I'm Batman. [00:18:42] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:18:42] Speaker A: And I'm like, can you explain? He goes, my place is, like, filled with Batman stuff, so we may have to go on the road. [00:18:51] Speaker C: Yeah. Why not? [00:18:53] Speaker A: Colin, whose last name we forgot. Birdman. And his second choice was Space Ghost. [00:19:02] Speaker B: Birdman. Mainly because he said, I like birds. [00:19:05] Speaker A: I like birds. This was. This was a fun one. Mark Mahoney on our editorial staff put together editorial pages and things like that. Superhero for a day. Underdog. [00:19:18] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:19:19] Speaker A: So that was great. And then I'm just gonna bring this to a shuddering halt with my two selections. [00:19:29] Speaker B: Mainly because no one knows who they are. [00:19:31] Speaker A: Exactly. So that's what we made Google for. I thought both were dc, but they're not. One was actually Marvel So I was interesting to remember Hannibal King, who was played by Ryan Reynolds in Blade. Okay, so we have some love there on her side. Meaning Shen. So the story is he was bitten by a vampire, but vowed never to take a bite. So he would steal blood and things like that and then battle vampires. So he's also detective. Vampire detective is kind of what he went with. [00:20:04] Speaker B: I think I briefly remember this. Did you make a show out of this at some point? [00:20:07] Speaker C: He was in. He was, I think, the third Blade movie, which I think a lot of people didn't care for that particular Blade. [00:20:15] Speaker A: Another Ryan went. Ryan Reynolds, you know, back for more cash. Secondly, Metamorpho. [00:20:26] Speaker C: Yeah. Dc, right? [00:20:27] Speaker A: Dc, yeah. Very colorful. [00:20:30] Speaker C: Yep. [00:20:30] Speaker A: And so Metamorpho is able to transmute his body into a wide range of elemental compounds. So he can become steel, he could become salt. He could become gold, silver, things like that. Iron. And also parts of his body, not his whole body, but he also do parts of it. So very similar. Almost like that Green Lantern. Green Lantern can create different things with his ring. Metamorpho could become those different items, but he's a skilled martial artist, archaeologist, and a detective thing. [00:21:03] Speaker B: I'm surprised are not on here. Iron Man. Surprised no one. [00:21:07] Speaker A: That was Rita. Rita was Iron Man. Okay, so there's her. [00:21:10] Speaker B: Spider Man. Surprised no one took that one. Also surprised at that. I thought we'd get at least one Deadpool. At least one person. [00:21:20] Speaker A: So my third. Again, unknown to most. Dead Man. Yeah, Dead man loved. Loved the whole character. And basically, Deadman was able to take over people's bodies. He was a dead person. And just take him over and then. [00:21:37] Speaker B: That's what I assumed. [00:21:38] Speaker A: Okay. [00:21:39] Speaker B: Yeah, that's it. [00:21:43] Speaker A: So fantastic. So, Mr. Arnold, enjoy your comic book day. [00:21:48] Speaker C: Yes. [00:21:49] Speaker A: As much as it was, you know, changed. Your plans were changed. [00:21:56] Speaker C: Should we tell the story? [00:21:57] Speaker A: I think we should. [00:21:58] Speaker C: Oh, we should tell the story. [00:21:58] Speaker A: I think you should. [00:21:59] Speaker C: All right. [00:22:01] Speaker B: I mean, I think you guys are acting like I should be upset that you're gonna tell this story. I'm not upset. I'll tell the story. Chad originally asked me to go, but Stan had already put in the back of my mind that we might have this. The Gazette date with the Phoenix, which we'll talk about shortly. Coming up. But he had it scheduled. He had solidified the day when I agreed to take Chad for his birthday to essentially just be his chauffeur because he wanted to get back at me for every time he comes shopping with me. And I asked him to hold something which is quite not that often unless I have my wallet. And that's mainly because I will literally just leave my wallet in somewhere and like forget about it for two seconds. Anyway, so he just wanted to get back at me by making me chauffeur him around for the day, which considering it was his birthday, I can't say no to. But when I found out that we were having Gazette night with the Phoenix on Sunday, the day after his birthday, meaning I only get one day off this entire week, which is just Saturday, I said I could not do it because I have 8 million other things to do because we don't currently have a Sunday reporter. So I'm also the on call person for that day. [00:23:07] Speaker C: That's true. That's what happened. [00:23:10] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:23:10] Speaker C: Yep. That's exactly how it went down. [00:23:12] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:23:12] Speaker C: That's when I realized it was like about a month ago. I was like, oh, this is. This is perfect. [00:23:16] Speaker A: So again, I got the gray shirts instead of black. [00:23:21] Speaker B: Well, I think the point that should be made here is I feel like I'm trying to be made to feel bad about not doing something on my only day off during the week that is essentially chauffeuring someone around, even though I'm the person who stepped in for everybody else on Sunday to be the on call reporter and to, you know, also pick up this other thing. So I just put that out there. [00:23:47] Speaker A: Why can't we be friends? Why can't we be friends? [00:23:50] Speaker B: So at the end of the day, I think I. I deserve a gigantic thank you. Because if something does happen on Sunday, none of you have to come in while you will be working. [00:24:00] Speaker C: As soon as you explained the situation, I was like, that's fine. But then I brought it up again, like two weeks later just to give you a hard time. Yeah, yeah. [00:24:08] Speaker A: That's the reason I brought it up. [00:24:09] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [00:24:10] Speaker A: That. [00:24:10] Speaker C: That's exactly what I did. [00:24:11] Speaker A: That's it. [00:24:11] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:24:12] Speaker A: But we had wings last night. [00:24:14] Speaker C: We did get wings. 25. Because I'm not hard time. [00:24:19] Speaker B: You said you brought it up to give me a hard time. [00:24:21] Speaker C: Oh, I did. Yes. [00:24:23] Speaker A: Maybe she is Iron Man. I don't got that Steel. Nothing. Everything bounces off her. She's. She's the woman of steel. She's Supergirl. There is no Superwoman. That's the only reason why I said girl. So don't be in the eyes. [00:24:34] Speaker C: That's true. That's what it is. [00:24:37] Speaker A: I was just waiting for something to come at me. [00:24:39] Speaker B: I watched Smallville. [00:24:40] Speaker A: Yes, we talked about Smallville. [00:24:42] Speaker C: Are you excited for the new Superman movie? That's coming out in July because Metamorpho is going to be in it. [00:24:48] Speaker A: I am. I, I think early on it's crypto was the big win. [00:24:52] Speaker B: I'm more excited about this one than I have been about past ones. Only because the trailer they released is so phenomenally put together. It actually looks good. [00:25:03] Speaker C: The Superman movie you talk about. Yeah. James Gunn. James Gunn is doing it. James Gunn is the guy that did the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and he's now. [00:25:13] Speaker B: May be a winner for. For them. [00:25:15] Speaker C: He's now the co CEO of DC Studios for. [00:25:21] Speaker B: Yeah, Marvel. Marvel may have. Marvel may have lost their marbles on this one. [00:25:25] Speaker C: Yeah. No, and it's. [00:25:27] Speaker B: But like let him go, I'm telling you. [00:25:30] Speaker C: Do you want to know why everyone wants to be Superman though? It's. It's. Yeah, he's powerful and everything like that. But why do I love Superman? It's just he's this powerful entity, but he does the right thing all the time. Oh, that's what he does. [00:25:43] Speaker B: He's a journalist by day, but he puts on the suit when he needs to be because I. That was my reason. [00:25:48] Speaker C: You love him because he's a journalist? [00:25:50] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:25:50] Speaker C: Clark Kent. [00:25:51] Speaker B: Yes. [00:25:51] Speaker C: Yeah, That's a good thing. That's a plus. [00:25:54] Speaker B: He's saving the world and. He's saving the world. [00:25:58] Speaker A: He's protecting the world and the First Amendment. [00:26:01] Speaker C: There you go. [00:26:03] Speaker A: Yeah, See? See you rub it off. How many times have I heard the First Amendment out of this one? [00:26:08] Speaker B: Oh yeah. You know, if you think about it, a lot of these superheroes have characters that really relate to the work that journalists do. You think about it. Velaso of Truth. Clark Kent, the journalist. [00:26:23] Speaker A: They talk about the Peter Parker. [00:26:25] Speaker B: Yes. [00:26:25] Speaker A: Photojournalists. [00:26:27] Speaker B: They also talk about the odd relationship between superheroes and journalists. This sort of back and forth that there is. And the oftentimes where, you know, Lois Lane, her source was Superman or a source that she played pretty close to the vest. [00:26:44] Speaker C: Did they come up like. [00:26:45] Speaker B: Just saying. [00:26:47] Speaker C: I think probably my favorite character. He's quickly becoming my favorite character is. Is Daredevil. [00:26:54] Speaker A: And Charlie Cox does a great job in this. [00:26:56] Speaker C: He does a great job, absolutely. But in the comics, waiting for this. [00:26:59] Speaker A: One to chime in cuz there was like, oh, I love Daredevil. And then the ey started going. So I'm like, I watched the movie. [00:27:04] Speaker B: I haven't watched the show. [00:27:06] Speaker A: You saw the movie with Aflac in. [00:27:07] Speaker B: It wasn't a bad movie. [00:27:09] Speaker A: I want to get my money back. [00:27:11] Speaker C: But in the comics, you Just hate every celebrity. [00:27:14] Speaker A: I don't hate every celebrity. Maybe you should have got stewards or more Duncan. I'm Randy. Today I smell like smoke. I was out. I was out of the huge fire aftermath and they're still putting the thing out and I smell kind of smoky. [00:27:30] Speaker B: We gotta move on to other topics here, guys. [00:27:32] Speaker C: Okay, so yeah, Daredevil the best. [00:27:36] Speaker A: So the proverbial trapdoor's been open and we're gonna say goodbye to Chad Arnold. Thank you for stopping in, sir. [00:27:43] Speaker C: Thanks for having me. [00:27:44] Speaker A: Absolutely. Enjoy your mug. [00:27:47] Speaker C: I will. The Stan and Shensho mug. [00:27:49] Speaker A: You're very welcome. And happy birthday again. [00:27:51] Speaker C: Thank you so much. Great to be here. [00:27:54] Speaker B: Okay, see ya. See you at our desk in five minutes, pal. [00:27:58] Speaker C: Bye. [00:28:00] Speaker B: Anyway, so we're gonna talk New York Phoenix Gazette Night. [00:28:05] Speaker A: So May 4, as much as you've heard, much to the angst of Shannon, is Daily Gazette Day. May 4th was selected in cooperation with the Phoenix because it is their final Sunday, 3 o'clock game. It's a big kids turnout. [00:28:21] Speaker B: Ah, it works well for a Sunday because, you know, Sunday papers were like a big thing for newspapers anyway. [00:28:27] Speaker A: And the newsy appearance and the current running of the spring newsy coloring contest, that was the perfect storm. Except for free comic book day in your plan. So that for that I apologize. The rest of it, I don't, it's. [00:28:41] Speaker B: I mean, I don't know why you're apologizing to me. I don't have to show for someone around. [00:28:45] Speaker A: Well, just the fact that you didn't. [00:28:47] Speaker B: Other than having to, you know, be on call on a Sunday. [00:28:50] Speaker A: So we invite everybody to come out and see two of the. The basketball league all stars in Shadel Millinghouse and Arsenio Arrington. And I had a chance to stop by practice and talk to them about those two players being selected, participating and winning this year's TBL All Star game in Maryland. [00:29:15] Speaker D: All right, Arsenio. Congratulations. Congratulations. Congratulations. TBL All Star 3 on 3 winner. And then without a doubt, dunk participant. What, what was it like when you, you got the call or you know, coach tells you you're an all Star? [00:29:40] Speaker E: I was excited, super excited because this is my third ish season in the TBL and I never had got this opportunity. I've had teammates who went from every year have went and they talked about how great the experience was. So just getting that call this year was just everything that I could have wished for as far as getting that experience for the first time. [00:30:01] Speaker A: The. [00:30:03] Speaker D: Who'd you call first when you found out who's the first text? Who's the first call? [00:30:09] Speaker E: My first call was my girlfriend. Yeah, I told her because she stays out here with me. So if she would have been anything but first, then we would have probably had a problem. Y'all might not have saw me today, but, yeah, I had to tell her first. Then I went down the line of family, called my mom and told other family members as well. [00:30:26] Speaker D: When you, when you become an All Star, what's the feeling going in? Because a lot of times when it's the first one, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna take in the experience, see what it's like, or I may not make it again and I gotta make my mark. So what were you hoping to do when you were going in? [00:30:44] Speaker E: It was honestly a little bit of both. Like, I was going in, just happy to be a part of it, being with some of the best players in the league and then come to find out I knew majority of them anyway from just past experience. So. So that was. It was fun seeing them. And then the other side was like, yeah, I have to make a mark this weekend just so people can know who I am. And, yeah, because you never know, this. This opportunity might not come around again, like you said. So just taking everything and just taking day by day. We were there for two days, so just both, both days soaking up as much fun and as much experience as I care. [00:31:19] Speaker D: How was the three on three? Was it all fun or was it all business? [00:31:23] Speaker E: No, one thing about this whole All Star weekend was it was all intense. It was intense from the jump. The three on three. We played the host team first, the Flying Cows first, and they got out on us. Their bench and home fans were there and they were super hype and they got us in the first one and then we ended up winning all the rest down the line and just got that. And then the All Star Game, same thing, super intense. We were playing a Flying Cows team and then our coach, who was Albany's, Albany's coach that we used to have, him and their coach had some stuff going on. So it was super intense. It was as the playing and the laughing and joking was between games where we weren't doing competitive events, but once we stepped on the court and tied our shoes, it was intense. The whole week there you see a. [00:32:08] Speaker D: Lot of teams, you know, in your division and close to your division. What's the look at the All Star Game from teams like are out west and things like that. What's that talent look like? [00:32:18] Speaker E: Oh, they got some good Players, they got some good players. Granted, I still think that we're the best team in the league. And I don't think top to bottom, I think, no, no team can compete with our team. But these guys, these other teams, they compete in their divisions. And some are dominating their divisions, just like us. Like the Florin cows I mentioned, they're undefeated. It's a Great Falls team. Our west was undefeated as well. So down the line in the playoffs, we have our work cut out for us for sure. [00:32:45] Speaker D: All right, Shawdell, All Star. Three on three winner, All Star mvp. [00:32:55] Speaker F: Yes, sir. [00:32:58] Speaker D: What's it, what's it like to be, in a sense, number one in an All Star game? [00:33:05] Speaker F: It's really a blessing, you know what I'm saying? I just want to thank God for even giving me the talent to even go out there and showcase that, but it's definitely a blessing. I enjoyed myself. I just want to thank my team for allowing me to go out there and showcase my talent, too. And Coach Roland for believing in me. He coached me for years, so he kind of know how I play, so it was kind of easy just to go out there and just be me, you know what I mean? [00:33:31] Speaker D: Dudy, how many All Star Games has this been for you? [00:33:34] Speaker F: Honestly, this is my first TBO All Star Game ever because during the TBL season, I always come late. I always come after All Star break because I'll be somewhere else playing. So this is my first season in the TBL from start. It's gonna be from start to finish. So I'm happy to be able to be playing the TBL from the beginning of the season, you know what I mean? So it's exciting for me. [00:33:57] Speaker D: So who'd you call first? Who'd you text first? [00:33:59] Speaker F: The first person I text was my fiance, Nicole. I actually, I called her, I told her, yeah, I'm an All Star. She said, oh, finally. I was waiting for it, you know, I'm sorry, because I was, you know what I'm saying? Because I've been working all season, you know what I'm saying? So it was a blessing to be able to be called. So that's the first person I called after that. I really called nobody else because I don't really be talking to people, you know. I mean, I just be on my own little bubble, you know. I mean, I hit my kids up, but they just asked me for money when I hit them up, so they didn't really care. [00:34:30] Speaker D: So the three on three, is that an automatic? [00:34:35] Speaker A: I mean, did you get to pick. [00:34:36] Speaker D: The Team or coach, pick the team or. [00:34:38] Speaker F: No, I actually, I actually picked the team because I knew, I knew I wanted to. Of course I'm gonna grab my teammate Arsenio. Then I knew try. I knew tri since I was in middle school. So. Trishell Burrell with Albany Kachun. So I'm like it's no, it's a no brainer. You know, I wanted to grab another 518 guy, local guy and I just wanted to go out there and put on for the 518. I wanted the 518 to have somebody to root for. And we went out there, represented the New York in a hole, you know what I mean? We was out there in Maryland and they was looking at us like we wasn't going out there and go work. And what we do, we pack the cows up. We packed the vipers up, you know what I mean? And it was some random team that was out there for the three on three and we packed them up too. So that's what we do. We in like the packaging business now. You can call us Amazon, you can call us FedEx, you can call us UPS because we're going ship it right out. Ship them right out the. [00:35:28] Speaker D: And then when we're in an All Star game and you've been in this before, just every team to you is new and everybody on your team was an All Star. [00:35:35] Speaker F: Yeah. [00:35:35] Speaker D: You know, at the high school level, the college level, everybody's got accolades. [00:35:39] Speaker F: Yeah. [00:35:40] Speaker D: But you're kind of the straw that stirs the drink. What's that like when you're in play and you've got less than a day to get to know some of these guys and what they can do, that's. [00:35:49] Speaker F: What you call favor. Favor with the Lord, favor with God, because you know what I mean? Because I pray so much throughout the day and I know God is going to bless me wherever, whatever I do what I do it. So I knew that God had me throughout the whole All Star weekend. And. And that's just favor, you know what I mean? So. And the guys that we had on the team, I knew some of the guys that we played against them, some of the guys I knew from back home when I used to live in Atlanta. So it's like, it was like a perfect mix, you know what I'm saying? Then we had Coach Roland, who was the coach that I knew. So it was a perfect mix mix, you know what I mean? So I really enjoyed it. The. [00:36:24] Speaker D: And what's it like to be. [00:36:25] Speaker C: I mean you got. [00:36:26] Speaker D: You just Finished up a hostile environment on the road back at the old place, you know, with the Patroons. But then, you know, the setup is you're playing the home team, you know, and their fans are there and they're selling their tickets and you're the outsiders. How was that atmosphere and what was it like to come out on top? [00:36:45] Speaker F: It was definitely exciting. It's really, it's really never a negative atmosphere when you're playing against across town rivals because all the fans are rooting for both of us. Honestly, it's. It's exciting, you know, I mean, so we love that, we love the noise, we love the adversity. That's what really brings us together when adversity because we're home and it's cool and everything, but we on the road, that's when we really stay together. That's when you really show your true colors and really show what type of team you are. I went down in this first, in the second quarter, in the beginning of the second quarter. I ain't play the rest of the game. But we got guys that stepped up. We got DJ that stepped up, we got Josh Montgomery that stepped up. AJ, you know, he always stepping up, you know what I'm saying? We got Arsenio had a big game, he was out there working, you know what I'm saying? We got Paul Parks that stepped up. We got Wally that stepped, we got Quad that stepped up, you know what I'm saying? We got, we got Mustafa who went out there and had a double double, you know what I'm saying? So his motive was out of this world, you know what I mean? He had 11 rebounds, he was going crazy, you know what I'm saying? Our whole team stepped up. So that's what makes great teams, you know what I'm saying? Because people could say I'm the mvp, I'm this, I'm that, but I'm nothing without my team. At the end of the day, I went down and my team stood up and showed that at the end of the day, we really don't even need me at the end of the day because we are so much of a great team, you know what I'm saying? So we went to Albany, at Albany, which is one of the best teams in our conference, and we took them over and won the game convincingly without me. So that just shows you how great our team is. Like we when next man one, one man go down, the next man stands up at the end of the day and that's what's great about Our team. [00:38:26] Speaker D: This year in All Star you get the full shot. You started early, people saw you, you got the votes. What's next? You gotta repeat as an All Star. If you're in the TVL next year, if you're an All Star next year, you got to get the MVP again and be the two time mvp. What's, what's on the list? [00:38:45] Speaker F: What's on the list? What's on the list is I'm gonna continue praying and I'm gonna continue putting God first. I'm gonna continue being myself and being authentic. Because at the end of the day, whatever happens, happens. Whatever is meant to be is meant to be. And I'm gonna just go out there and try to be myself and try to be the man that God allows me to be and want me to be. So that's my whole thing, you know what I'm saying? I can't plan anything out in the future. I'm just here to enjoy myself. I'm here to win and I'm here to provide for my family. I'm here to give the fans and crowd a great show and have people enjoy this game. Because when you play in this game, before it was entertainment, basketball was made for fellowship and to touch one another and to change each other's life. You know what I mean? So, and that's the main thing, people forget the sight of the game. So I just want to make sure that I'm spreading the gospel and spreading the love and telling people it may be competitive on the court, but it's all a show. And it's about brotherhood and sisterhood and everybody being together and coming together and becoming one. At the end of the day, no matter what race you are, no matter where you from, no matter what religion you are, at the end of the day, love always conquers all. Not me. [00:39:53] Speaker A: So that was pretty awesome. Just to recap. Shadel Millinghouse, first time all Star. Arsenio Arrington, first time all Star. They were joined by Treshawn Burrell of the Albany Patroons. So this is, this is the quality of that. The Phoenix and the 518, as you heard Shadel say, Tre Sean won the three point competition. Arsenio was on the three on three team that won and he participated in the slam dunk. That's all he would say. He goes, yeah, I was there. So I don't know if he got out of the first round or not, but he was probably tired. Shidel again, first time All Star. He's been in the league for several years, but as you heard him say, he was never start to finish. He always joined a team late so he missed out on the voting. But here's how it, how it finished out in the All Star Game. Trembirrell, 13 points, eight rebounds. Arsenio had some quality minutes. Shadel 28 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals and was named the MVP. Pretty awesome. [00:41:07] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean the New York Phoenix have had aside from one loss, the team and I mean that's really. They've had the year that any team would want to have when you first start off. So it's really just been amazing to watch them nail biting at times. Mainly that one patroon game. [00:41:26] Speaker A: Yeah, the first patroon game was close. [00:41:28] Speaker B: Yeah. But it's been fun. Great team, fun atmosphere. It's really honestly, it's nice to have a sports team to root for in the city other than Union College of. [00:41:44] Speaker A: Course, but a professional team. [00:41:46] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And I mean it's just a fun time. Anytime we go out there, we have a lot of great stories, most that cannot be told on the air for purposes of staying friendly with some sources. But yeah, one story. It might be a few but you know, it's always fun to go out there. I think Sunday is going to be a good time. It'll be interesting to see how Newsy does. [00:42:15] Speaker A: A lot of pressure, A lot of pressure on Newsy because this is the first time under our guidance, the stand and Shensho guidance as the godfather and godmother of Newsy. As we are. [00:42:29] Speaker B: As we are. [00:42:29] Speaker A: As we are. [00:42:30] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:42:31] Speaker A: As you reminded me, there would be no Newsy if you hadn't made an appearance in the 518. [00:42:36] Speaker B: Yes. [00:42:38] Speaker A: And so it wouldn't have come back. [00:42:41] Speaker B: As it has at this level. [00:42:42] Speaker A: Yes, at this level. [00:42:44] Speaker B: That was the point I was making. [00:42:46] Speaker A: Correct, correct. And friends. [00:42:49] Speaker B: And friends. [00:42:49] Speaker A: And friends. Making so many things happen with Newsy. [00:42:52] Speaker B: Yes. The bench runs deep. [00:42:54] Speaker A: The bench runs deep. [00:42:55] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:42:56] Speaker A: We're without a doubt much, much like. [00:42:58] Speaker B: The New York Phoenix. We also have a team for Newsy. [00:43:01] Speaker A: Exactly. [00:43:02] Speaker B: Yes. [00:43:03] Speaker A: And we're like family. [00:43:04] Speaker B: And we're like family. [00:43:05] Speaker A: Like family. So not only did just jumping back on the All Star Game. So they had the All Star Game, the guys came back, Shadell and Arsenio. Then they just a couple days later then went on to beat Trishon at the Albany Washington Ave Armory. 114. 105. [00:43:24] Speaker B: Yeah. If I remember correctly, we are what, two to two to one right now. [00:43:30] Speaker A: It'S two to one lead and then Albany has another Loss in between. So the Phoenix solid in first place. [00:43:35] Speaker B: Well, I just meant against the Patroons in general. Yeah. [00:43:38] Speaker A: So the Phoenix plays Sunday, our Gazette game, 3 o'clock. Then on Monday, Cinco de Mayo. They're at the Patroons again, season finale. So they really need to take this one. 3, 1, lock up first place, home field advantage in the division. They'll host the Phoenix. I'm assuming two out of three. If three, if three is needed, and go from there. So what do you do on Cinco de Mayo? Anything? [00:44:10] Speaker B: No. Okay, it's a Monday. I'm gonna go to work. [00:44:14] Speaker A: We're all going to work. I didn't know. I didn't know what our schedule is going to be. I know I'm gonna be. I know I'm gonna be in Washington. [00:44:20] Speaker B: Well, Aldi does have all the, like, Hispanic Latin foods on sale next week. Okay. You know, so if you want tacos, you can have tacos. [00:44:29] Speaker A: Okay. Taco shop in Burn Hills, A Bisbee. Stop. [00:44:33] Speaker B: That was a Bisbee. Yes. Phenomenal tacos, by the way. [00:44:35] Speaker A: Oh, no. Yeah, and they have a special. 11 to 2. Two tacos and a drink for. For $10. Well worth it. [00:44:43] Speaker B: But. Yeah. No, I don't. I don't really. I don't know. I'm not beholden to days like that. [00:44:47] Speaker A: That's the good of mine. Like, St. Patrick's Day is worldwide. I guess it's probably a North American thing. Dingus Day. It's on there for next year. [00:44:56] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean. I mean, even on St. Patrick's Day, I don't really do anything. Yeah, until next year, I wear green. [00:45:02] Speaker A: But till next year. Cause we may go to the St. Patty's Day crawl in Amsterdam next year, perhaps. You got the hair. You're gonna look Irish. [00:45:13] Speaker B: I mean, I already do look Irish, right? [00:45:16] Speaker A: But I mean, you're fit right in. They're gonna love you. [00:45:19] Speaker B: Okay, well, we'll see. I make no promises on anything that's too far in the future. [00:45:24] Speaker A: All right. The one thing we will promise is a podcast next week. [00:45:28] Speaker B: Well, actually, we can never. We can never to be too certain. Okay. We. We made a promise at one point to have a podcast one week. And I don't know if you remember, we had shootings and. [00:45:38] Speaker A: Right. [00:45:39] Speaker B: There was no podcast. [00:45:40] Speaker A: Shannon was taken away from us. [00:45:41] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:45:42] Speaker A: And everything was quiet. And then literally, I came back. The day. Yeah, the day you came back, we had. We had activity. Negative activity in the city. [00:45:56] Speaker B: Correct? Unfortunately, yes. [00:45:58] Speaker A: But staying in Shensho, there's been a. [00:46:00] Speaker B: Few rough Weeks lately. [00:46:02] Speaker A: Here we're on the Newsbeat. Yeah, we do that as well. We just don't have fun. We deliver. Yeah, we deliver. So we're trying, we hope to deliver fun next week, correct? We hope, yes. As. [00:46:13] Speaker B: And I think, I think we're trying to do Stewart's finally with our. [00:46:17] Speaker A: We have some, we have some celebrity Stewart's flights next week to be announced, some interviews. [00:46:24] Speaker B: Okay. Yes. [00:46:25] Speaker A: As the new Belmint ice cream was launched. Well, it's called new branding, Belmont. [00:46:35] Speaker B: It's a new branding. [00:46:36] Speaker A: The flavor was there. They unveiled a flavor. It was a press conference. They unveiled a new flavor. Don't be Mouth and Me was a new flavor. I'm just saying. I was there. [00:46:50] Speaker B: It's not a new flavor. They even said that, that they rebranded it. It's not. It's not a new flavor. I just for purposes of journalism and clarification, it is the mint cookie crumble rebranded to be the Bell Mint, which is great. I like it. It's a good idea. And honestly, mint flavored ice cream doesn't get the recognition it should. [00:47:12] Speaker A: Stewart's. We still love to have you as a sponsor, no matter if you rebrand it or not. [00:47:16] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't care either way. Call it Bell Mint all you want. Call it Bell Mint for the rest of the year. Honestly, that sounds cooler than mint cookie crumble. No offense to the first name, but, like, Bell Mint sounds cool. [00:47:26] Speaker A: All right, so more hot takes on ice cream next week with Shen. Hopefully that's our plan and may have some more celebrity flights to bring up. And then we'll recap. Hopefully all the fun we're going to have on Sunday. [00:47:42] Speaker B: Yeah. And if you want to still send us what flight you would want. [00:47:45] Speaker A: Absolutely. Stan and Shen at Gmail, please. Absolutely. And don't forget, come out and see Newsy. We'll do photos and things like that. I think it's gonna be a blast. Newsy's active. We got some great promo stuff that needs to get up, hopefully tonight. It's only been delayed a week now due to stuff, so hopefully we'll see that and then we're going to get out of here. And thank you so much for listening. Catch us on all your podcasting platforms, stan and shenmail.com and until next week. [00:48:19] Speaker B: Yes, next week we're going to have ice cream, so I'll be happy. I feel like we got to do the podcast. Eating a flight anyway. [00:48:28] Speaker A: You know what? I'm, you know, I'm waiting for what? [00:48:31] Speaker B: Oh, wait, I can't. [00:48:33] Speaker A: You can't say bye. [00:48:35] Speaker B: Oh, I can say bye. I just can't do the flight next week. Anyways, bye, everybody.
