[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hi, I'm Stan.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: And I'm Shen.
[00:00:03] Speaker A: And each week we bring you the Stan and Shen Show. And each week, we talk about fun things through our travels throughout the capital region. We touch on food, we touch on news, try to touch heavily on good news. And Shen's always available with hot takes.
[00:00:19] Speaker B: Yeah. So if you could follow along and listen to us every week on DailyGazette.com or on all major streaming platforms, we'd love to have you join us.
[00:00:30] Speaker A: Welcome back.
[00:00:31] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:00:33] Speaker A: You were missed.
[00:00:34] Speaker B: It's good to be alive.
[00:00:35] Speaker A: It's good to have you back.
[00:00:37] Speaker B: Yes, it is. As I went down for a couple days there. A few days, actually.
[00:00:44] Speaker A: You were out for a week.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: Yes, but it was two different things.
[00:00:48] Speaker A: I understand that, but it just like bad news collided.
[00:00:53] Speaker B: Yeah. When I said I needed a vacation, that was not the vacation I needed.
[00:00:56] Speaker A: Right. That's never the plan.
[00:00:57] Speaker B: No.
[00:00:58] Speaker A: Never the plan. So welcome back.
[00:01:00] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: You were missed.
[00:01:02] Speaker B: I can see. I had a lot of people stop me and, you know, give me thoughts and things.
[00:01:13] Speaker A: And. Gifts.
[00:01:14] Speaker B: Gifts.
[00:01:14] Speaker A: Since you missed Easter.
[00:01:15] Speaker B: Yes, I did. I got a nice little cow peep. Name.
[00:01:21] Speaker A: Cowpoke.
[00:01:23] Speaker B: Cowpoke.
[00:01:24] Speaker A: Cowpoke.
[00:01:24] Speaker B: Okay. Anyway, named it Jimmy.
[00:01:27] Speaker A: Yep. Jimmy. Jimmy's on the dust now. So the Stan and Chen show is here. We're back, reunited, and it feels so good. Another song that you'll probably never listen to.
[00:01:37] Speaker B: I actually have heard that song.
[00:01:39] Speaker A: Have you?
[00:01:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:40] Speaker A: How fitting is it, though?
[00:01:41] Speaker B: It's just sang better.
[00:01:44] Speaker A: Sang better.
[00:01:44] Speaker B: Okay.
Sung better.
[00:01:48] Speaker A: She's been gone, but some things never change. But anyway, Eden did a great job while you were gone and talked about one day.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: I'm going to have my own co host with.
[00:01:59] Speaker A: With Eden.
[00:02:00] Speaker B: That's not you.
[00:02:01] Speaker A: Just saying your lips to God's ears.
So in preparing for Eden to fill in, I did listen to Jungle.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:02:11] Speaker A: And the Volcano album. And I like Candle Flame and back on 74 and again watching the videos. The dance moves are pretty cool. I think we could pull some off.
It may be a lineup for, like, the Christmas show. The Christmas party. You and I doing some.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: I was thinking we could do that old dance where you guys go like this.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: It's not old. As you know, obviously, the art of audio is. Shen's waving her arms.
[00:02:37] Speaker B: I'm doing like an 80s routine in here. And Stan knows exactly what music video I'm thinking of from this. I can't tell you what it's from. I've just seen they do it on fresh prints. Carlton does it.
[00:02:50] Speaker A: The Carlton dance.
[00:02:51] Speaker B: Is it Is that the Carlton? I thought the Carlton was different.
[00:02:54] Speaker A: No, it's Tom Jones song.
[00:02:56] Speaker B: Oh, okay.
[00:02:57] Speaker A: Anyways, so important question, young lady.
What was your first presidential election that that you voted in?
And you want to know why I ask?
[00:03:15] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:03:16] Speaker A: This is our 18th podcast together.
[00:03:18] Speaker B: Oh, okay.
[00:03:20] Speaker A: We didn't do anything for sweet 16, so I thought we'd do something for 18.
[00:03:24] Speaker B: Was it the second?
[00:03:25] Speaker A: We can now hope.
[00:03:26] Speaker B: Who was it?
[00:03:28] Speaker A: So it's 10 years ago, so I mean how hard is it?
[00:03:31] Speaker B: It's hard. It was either the first trump over 20.
Cuz I was young in college.
[00:03:40] Speaker A: No, 20.
[00:03:41] Speaker B: So I graduated college at 21.
[00:03:43] Speaker A: So like 96.
[00:03:45] Speaker B: I was 17 when I entered college.
[00:03:47] Speaker A: 96 to no. 12. 20. 20. Yeah, sorry.
[00:03:50] Speaker B: So I think the first one I would have been able to vote in would have been Trump.
[00:03:55] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: Trump Hillary. Right. I think that was the first one probably.
[00:04:00] Speaker A: Well, you didn't do any good either in that one. Mine was Dukakis. H.W. bush.
[00:04:08] Speaker B: Hw. Wow.
[00:04:10] Speaker A: Hw. And that's only because throwing it back on that one I was again back at that period of time. We won't give a year here.
[00:04:18] Speaker B: So apparently you guys didn't do any good there either.
[00:04:21] Speaker A: But at that time like a mail in ballot because I was going to school and I wasn't at home.
[00:04:26] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:27] Speaker A: And I still use the home residence back in Delaware county. So mailing was like military. That's the only thought of like a mail in vote. Was someone in the military.
[00:04:37] Speaker B: Oh yeah. So you know, I had to do mine as a. Because I had a college address at the time. So I voted while I was in college. I actually remember doing it in class. They like came around and handed it out and it was like your civic engagement. So. So I civically engaged. Not that I wasn't already civically engaged with the newspaper. That was actually the first year we had a very heated discussion about an editorial at our student run newspaper.
[00:05:06] Speaker A: Really?
[00:05:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:05:08] Speaker A: You care to elaborate?
[00:05:11] Speaker B: No, no, not at this time because it's actually a decision I regret. So I regret not being part of the.
The larger group of student run newspapers across the student campus on this editorial.
[00:05:25] Speaker A: So while you were gone.
Okay. Again Aiden filled in and we were able to talk to Michelle Pollock and as I now refer to him as Citizen Purtel, Bob Purtel, the former Montgomery county executive. They're great on the.
[00:05:43] Speaker B: Is he the one who's going in the popcorn?
[00:05:45] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: Yeah, that's all I can remember him by. The guy going in the popcorn.
[00:05:50] Speaker A: Yep. Great guy. Great Sense of humor. The first half hour. I wish I pocket recorded it because it was priceless.
And we'll share those off here.
But we talked about Wingfest. Wingfest was last Saturday in Amsterdam.
Huge turnout. Weather was great.
So our calendar's filling up quickly for next year.
[00:06:13] Speaker B: Okay, great.
[00:06:15] Speaker A: So. Because I really want to pitch to Michelle Pollock and Ralph Spagnolo that they need celebrity judges for Wing Fest, and I think it needs to be you.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: And I. I. I okay with that. I. I'd be okay with that.
[00:06:28] Speaker A: You'd be okay with that?
[00:06:29] Speaker B: I like wings.
[00:06:30] Speaker A: Yeah. And there's like, 20 some odds, so it's not like soup stroll. I mean, there's travel. Because Amsterdam is not as walkable as State street is.
[00:06:38] Speaker B: That's okay. You can drive.
[00:06:39] Speaker A: Yes, I would drive. And we would have the judge pass to get by everybody quickly.
[00:06:44] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:06:45] Speaker A: But what's your favorite wing?
[00:06:48] Speaker B: So. Oh, they're probably the ones we tried at the Rusty Nail. The Blue Heat.
[00:06:52] Speaker A: Oh, the. The stand special. The. Oh, that's Rita's. Rita's got the. I've got the sweet heat. No, no, you like the blue heat. Yes. You have the blue cheese or a little. Little sweet. And I like the barbecue and the sweet heat on that.
[00:07:05] Speaker B: The blue heat right now. Not that I can have them, but yes.
[00:07:09] Speaker A: As you're recovering, yes.
[00:07:11] Speaker B: There's many things I cannot have. We're on a banana and cracker diet.
[00:07:16] Speaker A: So we're gonna pitch that. And then. You missed Easter.
[00:07:19] Speaker B: I did. And I missed pierogies. I might.
[00:07:22] Speaker A: But you got.
[00:07:22] Speaker B: I might suffer through it tonight.
[00:07:24] Speaker A: Easter found you today.
[00:07:26] Speaker B: It did. And I kid you not, I might just say screw it and suffer through.
[00:07:31] Speaker A: It's. You know, it's like pastini. You know what I mean? Like butter and noodles. I mean, pierogi is like a little bit of dough, a little bit of potato.
[00:07:38] Speaker B: I don't like the ham, but I'm probably gonna eat the ham.
[00:07:40] Speaker A: It's. You didn't get a ton of ham. There wasn't a ton of ham to go. So following Easter Monday.
Had a blast.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Did not have a blast on Monday.
[00:07:52] Speaker A: I had a blast.
[00:07:53] Speaker B: Very opposite the blast.
[00:07:55] Speaker A: And this is why we gotta book this for next year. Is Dingus day.
[00:08:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Apparently, you had all the fun this week, and Shannon died on the couch a little.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: You were. Yeah. You were called out of town and then returned ill.
[00:08:09] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:08:09] Speaker A: And. But you again thought of. And I'm like, so next year we gotta get celebrity judging for Wings.
[00:08:16] Speaker B: There's nothing you appreciate more than people Sending you all the fun things they're doing while you're stuck on the couch.
I held it in, Stan, but I was working. Yell at you for a minute.
[00:08:25] Speaker A: I was working.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: I'm just saying.
[00:08:26] Speaker A: I was working. You were with me. You were with me.
[00:08:29] Speaker B: I appreciated it, but I did not appreciate it in that moment.
[00:08:33] Speaker A: Like, I texted you on Sunday. I'm like, if I hear where's Shen? One more time, everybody. Where's Shen? Where's Shen? Is Shen cozy?
[00:08:42] Speaker B: Apparently, I'm the important half.
[00:08:45] Speaker A: You're the entertaining half. You're like, new. You're new. You're like the new kid. That's why.
So dingus day was a lot of fun. Basically, Easter Monday.
[00:08:57] Speaker B: What is dingus day?
[00:08:59] Speaker A: So I'm glad you asked. So dingus, loosely translated in Polish means worthy.
[00:09:05] Speaker B: I'm worthy. Is it a lot of pierogis?
[00:09:07] Speaker A: There's pierogis. There's halukis. A. J. They do.
[00:09:10] Speaker B: I'm not a big haluki fan, but I like the pierogis.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: Yes. And they do.
[00:09:14] Speaker B: I like the sour cream.
[00:09:15] Speaker A: They do shot skis.
[00:09:18] Speaker B: What are those?
[00:09:19] Speaker A: Did you see my photo?
[00:09:20] Speaker B: No. What is it?
[00:09:21] Speaker A: So if you can imagine a ski, a snow ski that has shots, has four holes in it, and it has four different shots that four people take at one time. So it's a group project. And I know you're not a big licker. You're a wine. You're a wino.
[00:09:41] Speaker B: First off, I don't know if I want to eat pierogies and sauerkraut and all the Polish foods and then just be like, yeah, let's all just do shots. Like, I feel like those.
[00:09:50] Speaker A: I just. I mean, the food side of things, just do it again.
[00:09:52] Speaker B: I know the European and, like, drinking.
[00:09:54] Speaker A: Is drinking, but it was a wonderful day. Red, white, all over, a lot of smiles. It was great.
[00:10:01] Speaker B: You're in a Polish came out.
[00:10:03] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh. It was. I mean, it was so great to, like. It was like, the rare time you could yell out stash and, like, four people turn around.
[00:10:13] Speaker B: It never will happen with Shenandoah.
[00:10:15] Speaker A: No. But, like, for me, the only person that calls me Stosh in the capital region is Phil Barrett.
[00:10:20] Speaker B: That's true.
[00:10:21] Speaker A: For decades.
[00:10:22] Speaker B: Yep. That is very true.
[00:10:23] Speaker A: You know, but I mean, the polka music and the dancing, you know, it was. It was absolutely wonderful. And I. And it was funny. I said, on Easter Sunday, but I.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: Know where to go for more pierogies.
[00:10:33] Speaker A: And on Easter Sunday, I made the joke. Like, I've been to church more in the last 10 days than I have been in years because I covered Palm Sunday in Niskiuna. I covered The Vigil of St. Mary's the Easter Vigil of St. Mary's in Balsa Spa, and then Easter Sunday, I was down in Amsterdam.
[00:10:50] Speaker B: I thankfully still avoided church.
[00:10:53] Speaker A: It was great. It was nice. It was nice.
[00:10:56] Speaker B: It was nice.
[00:10:57] Speaker A: It was nice.
[00:10:58] Speaker B: Yeah.
Before we move on to happier things, though, I am going to give a quick shout out because as some of you may be aware, I was home for a death in the family. But what I wanted to give a. And I didn't know if I wanted to do it on Facebook or not, but a huge shout out to Hollis Funeral Home in Syracuse went above and beyond the needs of our family that week.
And just exceptional work by everyone there and just really great. Grateful to them for all that they did. And the three guys, I'm sorry, I don't remember two of your names. I remember one because it's the same as my grandpa, which is Dave for helping us through the cremation process for this person and just wanted, you know, and Eileen there, who worked super hard to get what was probably the fastest cremation in history done and have him back to us all in one day. So just want to give a huge shout out on that before we continue to talk about happy things, because it's been on my mind today. So anyways, back to Polish food, which I could not eat pooch in my. In my sadness, could not have because I was sick.
[00:12:15] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:12:17] Speaker B: But we'll suffer through today to help again.
[00:12:19] Speaker A: You know, truly a shout out to house. I mean, we talked. We talked while you were out.
[00:12:23] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:12:25] Speaker A: It takes special individuals to literally do that job.
[00:12:32] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:12:32] Speaker A: To be there. It's. Whether it's. I mean, it goes right up there with an ER doc, an emt, your worst time, and then you have these people that are there for you in every way, sense of the word, and it helps get you through it.
[00:12:50] Speaker B: Yeah. And I mean, just like I said, Eileen, who I don't know, she's taken over the business from her father, but just really nice.
And again, just, I mean, let us come down there and talk things through with her and get paperwork filled out that we needed to have filled out and just really respectable place in Syracuse. And if anyone ever, you know, needs to use them, I highly recommend them because they just did a phenomenal job. And, you know, they allowed us extra moments with this person we really cared about. And they got us back to him. Back. Got him back to us. Very quickly, to which I know that my. You know, my family was exceptionally grateful for in that trying time. So.
But yes. So I was home dealing with that death, and then I. On my way back, as you are aware, because we talked on the phone for about, I don't know, half an hour.
I suffered through driving home while I was actually very sick and. And fell significantly ill. Probably the worst I've ever had it. And I mean, I've had Covid. I've had. Well, maybe not the worst. I've had it. I had the flu in college one time, and that was pretty bad. But this is probably, like, second to that. This is worse than when I had Covid. This is just really bad. I mean, could not move off the couch. Also, huge shout out to Chad, who came over and helped me through a couple of the nights. Made sure I got up, made sure I ate. I think without that, I probably would have withered away to nothing because I just was not feed. Feeding myself because it was so difficult. Had the stomach flu, which, if you guys know, is currently going around, is significantly horrible. So to have that while you're trying to grieve and then Easter happens, and you just want to eat a lot of food when you grieve, and you can't do that was very hard. But I will be digging into pierogies today.
Sad I did not get more. We'll talk about how we make sure get a little extra next year, but still gotta order some ahead of time with the fam.
[00:14:54] Speaker A: There was some words exchanged when we were, like, divvying up the pack of the container.
[00:14:58] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna have to make a little bit more next year, y'all.
[00:15:03] Speaker A: Well, don't forget, you could have partake and took. Yeah, see, yeah, that's the mistake. That's the error of your ways there. Yeah, you should have fought, you know, but you couldn't fight through. But. No, I mean, I think everyone's happy. I know your gym did put out a missing persons report.
[00:15:20] Speaker B: Yeah, I'm not. Well, the morning I go back, I know everybody can be like, where you been? And I'm gonna have to explain.
[00:15:26] Speaker A: I thought you canceled.
[00:15:27] Speaker B: I'm gonna have to explain everything 17 times to people and try not to cry through it every single time I explain what happened. A lot of people at my gym do know what was going on, but. Yeah, I'll be super excited to get back in, though. Also, caffeine. I'm.
[00:15:43] Speaker A: I didn't bring anything. I didn't bring it.
[00:15:45] Speaker B: I knew I'VE been without since Sunday. No, since probably Saturday.
Oh, man.
I'm not saying I'm jittery. Like, I don't have that much of an addiction, but, like, having to come back in today, not have any. I'm tired. I'm ready for a nap.
[00:16:04] Speaker A: That's where you're like, I'm just gonna take a day today. I'm gonna work a day shift today. I'm not gonna do the big. I'm not gonna return and do the 12.
[00:16:10] Speaker B: No, no. I'm just gonna do my normal eight hours today. I'm out of here at five. This might not even be eight. It might be seven today. It is what it is.
Anyways, back on topic.
[00:16:21] Speaker A: Back on topic.
[00:16:22] Speaker B: So we are. We are needed for coming back around to the job.
[00:16:26] Speaker A: Back around the job. The. So what's been great is we've had the conversations about top four albums.
[00:16:33] Speaker B: We did.
[00:16:34] Speaker A: And ice cream flights.
[00:16:35] Speaker B: And ice cream flights, which I cannot partake in.
[00:16:38] Speaker A: And I cannot tell you what a great icebreaker it is. It is so much fun.
[00:16:42] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. People always want to talk about that.
[00:16:45] Speaker A: And, like, I'm at Stewart's, and, you know, I'm on the road.
[00:16:48] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:16:49] Speaker A: And so, like, when I'm at Stewart's refilling, you know, my reusable cup is Earth day coming up. Thank you. Stewart's also willing to take. Take you as a sponsor talking about.
[00:17:00] Speaker B: Your ice cream flights today.
[00:17:01] Speaker A: But we celebrate, like, Amsterdam did their cleanup day last Saturday.
[00:17:06] Speaker B: Yesterday.
[00:17:07] Speaker A: And the cup day. So I. I use my reusable cup all the time.
[00:17:11] Speaker B: Oh, okay.
[00:17:12] Speaker A: So I'm always there. So, you know, I'm checking out. And then I'll usually get, you know, hot dogs with no buns, because that's what I should do. And.
[00:17:19] Speaker B: But big shout out to that guy, the one at the.
[00:17:22] Speaker A: At Dan who gave us the official Dan.
[00:17:24] Speaker B: Is that Dan? No.
[00:17:26] Speaker A: And Wilton and Wilton who gave us the new flavors.
[00:17:28] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't. I don't remember his name. It was on there. We were on a first name basis that week, and then we got sidetracked.
[00:17:36] Speaker A: Yeah, I guess sidetracked. So that's been huge. Just like. So when I'm at Stewart's, I'm asking Stewart's employees, hey, what's your flight?
[00:17:43] Speaker B: What's your flight? Yeah.
[00:17:44] Speaker A: Peanut butter pandemonium is, like, tops.
[00:17:47] Speaker B: Well, it's like one of their number one flavors to begin with. It's up there for me. But I.
But I would rather not have a vanilla base Stargazer. Oh, phenomenal.
[00:17:59] Speaker A: Gotta have it out of this world.
[00:18:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, ha.
[00:18:01] Speaker A: The Dake family again. We'll trade my input on your marketing side.
[00:18:07] Speaker B: Also, if you go back in some episodes, we did have an idea for an ice cream. Hit us up.
[00:18:13] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. The newsy.
[00:18:15] Speaker B: The newsy.
[00:18:15] Speaker A: The newsy. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
[00:18:17] Speaker B: We can make that happen, so.
Oh, I even.
[00:18:22] Speaker A: Flights are not over.
[00:18:25] Speaker B: When are they done with them?
[00:18:26] Speaker A: No, we have a new flight to discuss.
[00:18:28] Speaker B: What is that?
[00:18:29] Speaker A: And partake in.
[00:18:31] Speaker B: Oh.
[00:18:31] Speaker A: Enjoy once you're on the mend.
[00:18:34] Speaker B: Yeah. What is it?
[00:18:35] Speaker A: I think we're gonna make. I think we're gonna make possibly a biz beat. Stop.
[00:18:39] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:18:40] Speaker A: Next week.
[00:18:41] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:18:43] Speaker A: Coffee Planet is now offering latte Latte flights.
[00:18:49] Speaker B: Oh, I did see that. But we've already done them.
[00:18:51] Speaker A: And ice. So we just gotta do it as a tasting.
[00:18:53] Speaker B: Yeah, we can do it as a.
[00:18:54] Speaker A: You do the podcast live.
[00:18:56] Speaker B: Oh, sure. Yeah.
[00:18:57] Speaker A: We'll take it on the road.
[00:18:59] Speaker B: The owner there is amazing. Oh, and they also have the bacon scallion.
The sriracha bacon scallion, blank, cream cheese.
[00:19:10] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:19:11] Speaker B: Could it be a.
[00:19:12] Speaker A: Could it be a bagel?
[00:19:15] Speaker B: That's not where it's at.
[00:19:16] Speaker A: Could it be a side dish?
[00:19:17] Speaker B: No, it's a cream cheese. You can actually get a package there.
[00:19:20] Speaker A: Really?
[00:19:21] Speaker B: Yeah, they do tons.
[00:19:23] Speaker A: And tomorrow, Thursday, Lake Ridge opens.
Lake Ridge Farms.
[00:19:29] Speaker B: Lakeside.
[00:19:30] Speaker A: Lakeside there too.
[00:19:31] Speaker B: Lakeside.
[00:19:32] Speaker A: Lakeside. Lakeside Farms. It doesn't matter. You're gonna text me, Stan. I feel better. Can you eat donuts? It's gonna happen.
[00:19:38] Speaker B: I'm not gonna do it.
[00:19:40] Speaker A: You're gonna. Everyone tune in next week because we will find out what the over under is on Shen asking for donuts tomorrow.
[00:19:48] Speaker B: I'm not gonna.
[00:19:50] Speaker A: I.
No. And also happy. No.
[00:19:54] Speaker B: Cause the wedding's a month out, so I gotta.
[00:19:56] Speaker A: You already cut. You got sick. You're already down 5. So how that works. Happy anniversary to our own Ken shot the Party Shots podcast. He has 450th episode last week.
[00:20:09] Speaker B: Wow.
We might make it.
[00:20:12] Speaker A: We're 18.
But we're only once a week.
[00:20:16] Speaker B: We're 18. Oh, wow.
[00:20:19] Speaker A: The first question I asked you when you could vote, and I told you it was because this is the 18th podcast.
[00:20:23] Speaker B: So at 21. 21. Are we drinking?
[00:20:28] Speaker A: We may be someplace else for 21. We may have to pick a spot and raise a glass. We'll raise a glass.
[00:20:35] Speaker B: Well, we still have to come back to Belmont on Broadway. Those poor people we left hanging. I'm so sorry.
[00:20:40] Speaker A: They're aware. They're aware.
[00:20:42] Speaker B: We will come back.
[00:20:43] Speaker A: They're aware. And we have gifts now for returning guests. We do, we do.
We do. And Michelle Pollock was tickled, absolutely tickled with her gift as she was a second time podcast guest.
[00:20:58] Speaker B: Yeah, we should get rankings.
[00:21:00] Speaker A: Rankings.
[00:21:01] Speaker B: See who's been here. And we'll just put a tally next to their name.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: We'll put their pictures up like in the dry cleaners. Yeah, you know, put them up in the podcast room.
You know, like, Ken will fill it like with all the, all the hockey coaches that, you know, it'll be like an automatic, but maybe we'll take a little piece of a wall. Ken will have like the whole place filled with his podcast guest. But then we'll have like a special spot stand in Shen show.
Little corner. Little corner.
April still a big month. As we talked about Autism, Autism Awareness Month. As I wear my.
A lot of compliments on the lanyard on my autism awareness lanyard. A lot of people yesterday at the drive thru, I was getting something and the young person at the drive through saying, I love the lanyard. I said, thank you.
April's also. We talked about this briefly in our meeting is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. And I sat down with Maggie Frank from Wellspring CEO, executive Director there and talked about awareness that April is Domestic Violence Month and all the things that Wellspring does. And it was enlightening. And part of it is April 30th. Next Wednesday is Denim Day for domestic violence awareness. And interesting story on that and everything that they do. And then one of the things that came out and I mentioned was that one in four women will in one way, shape or form be exposed to domestic violence. And one in seven men. And it's, I mean, that's a heartbreaking statistic. It's soul crushing, a disappointing statistic. And so I had Maggie on the Tell Me youe Story podcast. So that'll be up this week and we'll have a print component in Monday's edition of the Daily Gazette. But a couple things. One thing that's important, they also have a great podcast studio.
They do a podcast each week. It's called Springboard. So as you listen and you have subscribed to the Stan and Shen show on all your available platforms. Same thing with Wellspring, about 15 minutes. Talk about something they're doing, guests, things are coming up, things that are available. It's called Springboard with the Wellspring staff. And that was really great. And talked to Maggie about what can you do? What can I do? And she talked about a lot of different ways and people talked about volunteering, but then volunteering in different ways versus that hour and a half of doing something for Habitat. You know, a lot of it, most of it is knowing what is out there, being there for people in your workplace, your family, your community, to make them aware that there's assistance available and kind of like know the numbers, know, you know, know of Wellspring, know where they're located and know those phone numbers and make that available to anyone you may come into and be open, you know, and understand it and all the different programs there. So that was absolutely wonderful. And then also part of last week, but part of last night was our New York Phoenix back on top.
[00:24:18] Speaker B: Correct.
[00:24:18] Speaker A: Northeast Division. So well beat the Albany Patroons on the road.
[00:24:25] Speaker B: Yeah. So were they 2, 2 and 12.
[00:24:28] Speaker A: And 1 in the, in the season series, 114, 105 and credit credit put the Patroons because I mean they were down at the half again just by a couple points.
The coach made some great adjustments and as I was texting Sam Clifford because he was immediately, as soon as the game ended, he wasn't available. He was at the primary job.
But the CEO, his wife Becky was there and back on top. And I talked about, I thought this was the best defense that the Phoenix have played all year from all the games that we've seen and that I've seen. And they really came out on a mission in that second half and were aggressive defensively and it really changed the whole tempo of the game.
And then prior to the game, Shadel Millinghouse and Arsenio Arrington were honored. They were All Stars at the tbl, the Basketball League All Star game in Maryland last week. And they also won the 3 on 3 competition and Shadel was the All Star MVP.
[00:25:40] Speaker B: Yes, I did see that. That's awesome.
[00:25:42] Speaker A: So we're going to be I'm going to stop by tomorrow during the shoot around and grab a couple minutes with both of those All Stars and we'll have that available for next week's podcast as our guest as we continue to look to book our guests for Belmont on Broadway, which is coming up so fast, which is great.
[00:26:01] Speaker B: We have prepared way less for it this year. Yes, this year I think we're the most relaxed about it. We're like we knew in something, we're talking about it.
[00:26:11] Speaker A: We got. We know the drill. So the New York Phoenix are in town this weekend, Friday, Saturday at the New York Armory Armory New York. New York Armory Armory New York Studios.
[00:26:23] Speaker B: Armory Studios in Schenectady, New York.
[00:26:26] Speaker A: But it's like Armory Studios, New York. Talk to Ray Leger, once again, who absolutely loves me.
He's a Stan fan too. So just like, don't.
[00:26:38] Speaker B: There's a story. There's a story I have to tell you off Mike about why he loves me so much.
A little meet and greet we had at an establishment.
[00:26:51] Speaker A: Oh, again. Oh, yes, yes, yes.
That nugget.
That's an all time shen nugget. That is so good. Yes, so good. I know the story, but we'll save that maybe for the last one. And so again, shout out to Ray not only for being the wonderful person he is, but the human being. And I said this to Ray yesterday. Ray Leger was a. A sponsor for the previous weekend, the Ohana foundation had a gala, their first ever gala to honor their son Noah, who they lost 10 years ago. And my godson Kyle Greth and his wife Amy Greth created the Ohana foundation to help other couples with infant loss.
So Noah would have been 11 this year, but this is the 10th really event they've had. But the first time they did a gala out in Latham and Leger Group was one of the business sponsors that I saw throughout the night. And I made a point of seeing Ray yesterday and say, listen, I just want, you know, I saw this. You know, this means a lot to me as a person, as someone in the community and what it meant to the family. And Ray was. And I sent this text to you because I sent it to the family was, Ray goes, How can you say no?
[00:28:02] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:28:03] Speaker A: You know, he wanted to sponsor, be a sponsor for this event. And I just. And a lot of that is Schenectady. Sam Clifford talked about when he was on the podcast, like things he tried to do and people he tried to bring in when he was with the Albany Patroons ownership group took him three years. And then he comes over to Schenectady with the New York Phoenix, and in three months he's got the same level of support, if not more. And I think that just speaks to the community that we work in immediately, but also the surrounding community.
There are passion, a lot of passion, a lot of good things going on. Next week. We have.
Do we have anything?
[00:28:44] Speaker B: Not at the moment, Stan. We're flying by the.
[00:28:48] Speaker A: We have the Eddie Awards Sunday night. Sunday night. A lot of music awards will be there. 30, 34 categories I think this year are going to be awarded. So look for that coming out.
[00:29:00] Speaker B: And I will be there.
[00:29:01] Speaker A: If not, Stan will be there.
[00:29:03] Speaker B: Stan will be there. I will not be there.
[00:29:06] Speaker A: Should I wear the stand And Shen shirt gear under my stuff. So, like, you're there in that way.
You're representing. You're representing. Shen's representing. She's here.
[00:29:17] Speaker B: I showed off that shirt when I was home, by the way.
[00:29:19] Speaker A: Did you?
[00:29:20] Speaker B: Had one in my car.
[00:29:21] Speaker A: Yeah, that's right. Just in case you gotta throw it on.
[00:29:23] Speaker B: I was like, just saying we're a big deal now.
[00:29:26] Speaker A: We're a big deal. We have T shirts.
[00:29:28] Speaker B: We have T shirts.
[00:29:29] Speaker A: We have. We are.
[00:29:30] Speaker B: We don't have any to give out, but we got T shirts.
[00:29:32] Speaker A: Exactly. We've got our own logo. Our own logo merch. We don't have anything coming out of the T shirt cannon.
[00:29:39] Speaker B: They're very colorful, though.
[00:29:41] Speaker A: Speaking of the Stan and Shen show, May 4, can we get a black.
[00:29:45] Speaker B: And white on those shirts for the. For the shedding crew?
Anyways, May 4th, what, you're changing the.
[00:29:56] Speaker A: Color scheme now or the black?
[00:29:57] Speaker B: No, I like that color. I just feel like it's, you know, also, it's very used yam. Very Stan colors that you can.
[00:30:03] Speaker A: Because you know why I didn't call you on it? Because it would be a thing.
[00:30:07] Speaker B: Well, it's always a thing.
[00:30:09] Speaker A: It is.
[00:30:09] Speaker B: And that's why everything we do is.
[00:30:11] Speaker A: This was task avoidance. I'm like, this looks good.
[00:30:14] Speaker B: Well, no, I'm saying for right now. And then when we get bigger, you.
[00:30:17] Speaker A: Want to go black.
[00:30:18] Speaker B: Go black and white real quick.
[00:30:20] Speaker A: We have to go black and white because there's shadow. So we'll call it the Shen shirt.
[00:30:24] Speaker B: Black and blue. Like the blue.
[00:30:27] Speaker A: Black and blue. That's usually. Well, we get beat up a lot.
That's why we have black and blue. So May 4, black with a bright blue logo, maybe.
[00:30:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:30:38] Speaker A: Okay, we'll take a look at that. May 4, the Gazette night at the New York Phoenix. Very excited. It's a 3:00 Sunday game.
[00:30:47] Speaker B: Please wear your newsprint.
[00:30:49] Speaker A: We got Newsy. Newsy's in training.
Newsy is in training right now, getting ready to come out with the team.
[00:30:56] Speaker B: And I can totally guarantee you I'm not Newsy.
[00:31:00] Speaker A: Shh. We're all newsy. Yes, but Newsy's in training.
Newsy's in training, and I don't miss the free throw. Newsy has a Newsy. Actually, Newsy has a photo shoot tomorrow with Singe.
[00:31:14] Speaker B: Oh, wow.
[00:31:15] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:31:16] Speaker B: Oh, boy.
[00:31:17] Speaker A: Yes. Hot news.
Hot news.
[00:31:21] Speaker B: Oh, you like that?
[00:31:22] Speaker A: You like that?
[00:31:24] Speaker B: I'm not gonna say I did. It was funny. Ish.
[00:31:27] Speaker A: That's gonna be awesome. Singe is excited. Singe is excited.
[00:31:32] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:31:33] Speaker A: I talked to Singe yesterday.
[00:31:35] Speaker B: Great.
[00:31:35] Speaker A: Singe is making time in their schedule.
[00:31:38] Speaker B: That's awesome. I'm glad that Singe could accommodate us.
[00:31:41] Speaker A: Yeah, Singe is excited. Talked about, you know, the plan. Sam's got a plan for Newsy coming out with the team. The Newsy spring coloring contest launched on Sunday in the Gazette, Tuesday, and all our four other papers.
[00:31:54] Speaker B: What are we doing this year?
[00:31:57] Speaker A: We are spring. It's a spring. So the print version, the one that's in the newspaper, is Newsy playing hopscotch.
[00:32:06] Speaker B: Ooh.
[00:32:07] Speaker A: And then the two variant or alternate covers, as our friend Chad Arnold will say going into comic book day, which he's asking you to Uber him throughout on Saturday the 3rd. Not gonna happen.
[00:32:23] Speaker B: No, because I gotta be there on the fourth.
[00:32:25] Speaker A: Right. On the alternate cover is Newsy gardening. So, Shen, I think we need to do an adult version where you need to color that and maybe those plants will live. And then also Newsy flying a kite.
[00:32:36] Speaker B: Listen, I was gone for a week and my plants did die, so.
[00:32:39] Speaker A: All right, Very good. So welcome back. We're glad to have you back. You were missed.
[00:32:45] Speaker B: Thank you.
[00:32:47] Speaker A: Are you glad to be back?
[00:32:48] Speaker B: Yes. I told myself that I could have still stuck with the day off. I could have kept my what was going to be another sick day because I was, like, iffy at first. This start the day, I was like, but I think I need to go outside. I needed to get some fresh air. I needed to put on clothes that weren't pajamas or sweatpants.
[00:33:07] Speaker A: You need to do the podcast.
[00:33:08] Speaker B: I needed to do the podcast. I needed to do my makeup. I needed to do my hair. I needed to just do all the normal things again.
[00:33:17] Speaker A: You need a stand time.
[00:33:18] Speaker B: Yeah. And I do feel exceptionally better after doing all of those things today. So the hardest part is being on this bland food diet still, because I am aggressively hungry all day long and I haven't been able to eat anything. Really? Cause I'm, like, not risking it in the office. So that's why I'm folding the pierogies until I get home.
[00:33:40] Speaker A: Okay.
But pierogies, I think, cure all.
[00:33:44] Speaker B: They better. That's the first thing I'm eating when I get in the door.
[00:33:47] Speaker A: You know what's the best part about Dingus day is when they do the Schottsky.
And this is you only hear. We only hear at Polish weddings. But this is the other fun part, is everybody yells bastrovia.
It's so great. It's so great to be around that community. So friendly. So great.
All right. So we're just. Yeah. Shen just is not paying attention. She's having too much fun on her phone about. About one of our former guests. So all. All in fun. But again, in all sincerity, welcome back. Glad to have you back.
Any. Do we have anything big planned? I mean, I think.
[00:34:25] Speaker B: No, we gotta get a Bisbee. A Bisbee done. We were supposed to have one, I think, this week, but unfortunately.
[00:34:30] Speaker A: Email stan and shenail.com.
[00:34:33] Speaker B: Yep. So gonna have a Bisbee coming up, I think. Gotta figure out what that's gonna be. Working on some stories.
So, yeah, back in the shuffle. Hopefully by next week. Fully all the way. Feels weird coming back after, like, a week. I feel like I got everything I needed to do.
[00:34:53] Speaker A: It's odd. It's like some days I was having this conversation with Rita, you're off. So, like, I have to, like, really, really, really try not to be in Slack and look at the email and jump on something, or naturally, for me, get something done that was supposed to be done the day before.
That's, like, a little bit different because, like, you're still in it, but you're not in it. But then when you have that. Those gap days.
[00:35:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:19] Speaker A: Like, Belmont, we're working, but, like, we have no idea what's going on in the rest of the world because you're so focused. Or you have, you know, like, in your. Like when you get called out of town and you just can't, you know.
[00:35:32] Speaker B: Yep. Yeah.
[00:35:33] Speaker A: You're not even turning off the phone, but, like, it doesn't even matter.
[00:35:36] Speaker B: Yeah. So I miss one of our colleagues leaving for a different job. Like, there were, like, whole, like, just things that I missed out on. I had to get, like, updated when I came back, and it's just like. And I wasn't gone that long, but it. When you work in the news business, a day is like a year, it feels like.
[00:35:52] Speaker A: And I've had. I know, I know. In our sports department, sometimes you go into those Rita can relate to. This is back in the day at the other location when we would be on the shores of Fish Creek at rowing regattas, and it would basically be three days. And that's what you're doing for 12 hours a day for three days. That's all you're doing. You come back and you're like, what happened?
[00:36:16] Speaker B: Yeah, that's basically what happened to me. I think I responded to maybe a total of two slacks. I think I posted something in there just thanking everybody who picked up some of the stories that needed to be done in Saratoga county during the week. And I think I responded to Miles, like, one time. Other than that, I was pretty much like, if you cannot reach me on my personal cell phone, you probably don't have my number for a reason. So.
[00:36:42] Speaker A: Yes. And with that said, you can't go away again. I'm done pinch hitting. I'm just telling you, when you go away, it's like the inmates are running the asylum. You're gone.
I'm in Saratoga covering a story on ice.
That's fun for a sports guy.
Then you're gone. And then not so bad. I did a library budget story, which is important to be done, so that was kind of okay.
And then everything else I do, but you're, like, at the Andrew Puglis level. Like, you can't go on vacation. Yeah, I can't. I can't.
[00:37:22] Speaker B: Yeah, it's crazy, isn't it?
[00:37:23] Speaker A: It's. We're needed.
[00:37:25] Speaker B: Can't take another week off like that.
[00:37:27] Speaker A: We're needed. Which is nice.
[00:37:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Not that it was.
[00:37:29] Speaker A: So hopefully you need us, too. And tune into the Stan and Shen show podcast.
[00:37:35] Speaker B: You almost messed it up. That's okay. Anyways, we gotta go. Bye.
[00:37:40] Speaker A: We got our train. Hey, everybody, have a great week. We'll see you soon. Be well.
