[00:00:00] Speaker A: Hi, I'm Stan.
[00:00:02] Speaker B: And I'm Shen.
[00:00:03] Speaker A: And each week we bring you the Stan and Shen Show.
And each week we talk about fun things through our travels throughout the capital region. We touch on food, we touch on news, try to touch heavily on good news. And Shen's always available with hot takes.
[00:00:20] Speaker B: Yeah. So if you could follow along and listen to us every week on DailyGazette.com or on all major streaming platforms, we'd love to have you join us.
[00:00:29] Speaker C: We can get you on that stage.
[00:00:31] Speaker A: We talk about being on the main stage.
[00:00:33] Speaker B: Listen, if you need an emcee, we do have credentials. Now we have emceed the second, which was technically the first stage for this connectivity holiday parade and the Independence Day fireworks at Scotia.
[00:00:47] Speaker A: Yep. To date.
[00:00:48] Speaker B: To date.
[00:00:49] Speaker A: To date.
[00:00:50] Speaker B: We are available though.
[00:00:51] Speaker A: We are available.
Just ask her.
[00:00:54] Speaker C: I mean, we have a special events coordinator, right. Jason Lique.
[00:00:57] Speaker B: I'm mean, listen, I thought we were best friends with Jason. He needs to just give us the rundown and let us know and we will check our schedules. We probably can make it work though.
[00:01:06] Speaker D: Have your people call his people.
[00:01:08] Speaker C: Yeah, we have people.
I think we can do us if.
[00:01:12] Speaker B: I have his people call my people. I mean, have him call Stan.
[00:01:15] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:01:15] Speaker A: I was going to say. All I know is I'm Shen's handler and I don't know if I have Rita's my handler. Just to make sure I keep on moving along or else everything becomes a three hour tour.
So happy Monday.
[00:01:26] Speaker B: Yeah, Happy Monday.
[00:01:27] Speaker C: Good to be here. Long weekend. Hold on. We have to work a full week this week. Is everybody prepared for that Chen audio wearing day?
[00:01:35] Speaker B: Thank God. That's. Yeah, you're right. You showed up to your own funeral this week.
Yeah, I mean, there's lots to get done.
[00:01:43] Speaker D: So it makes it easier when there's something to celebrate at the end of the week though it sure makes going in on Monday a lot easier.
[00:01:50] Speaker B: I was gonna say full.
[00:01:52] Speaker C: Full right there for us.
[00:01:54] Speaker B: We're, you know, we're covering summer night on Friday. So is it really a work day?
Just like the having the Scotia fireworks? Was it really a work day?
[00:02:03] Speaker C: So you're not really checked out, but you're kind of like anticipating all the excitement. Yeah, something like a summer night brings community.
[00:02:10] Speaker A: I can confirm, I can confirm that it's not a work day because Stanley's off on Fridays.
[00:02:14] Speaker B: Is the National Guard going to be there again with a table?
Because I might have to do Facebook live push ups again.
[00:02:21] Speaker C: I mean, it's either going to be the National Guard Table. Or the Marine Corps Pull Ups or Right.
[00:02:26] Speaker B: Or the Pull Ups camp.
[00:02:28] Speaker D: Would just love to see you.
[00:02:32] Speaker C: Let's go. Come on.
[00:02:34] Speaker A: So welcome to the Stan and Shen round table today.
[00:02:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:39] Speaker A: So we have our. Our ray of sunshine, Maureen from the downtown Schenectady Improvement Corp. That's right.
[00:02:48] Speaker B: Oh, he got it right this time.
[00:02:49] Speaker A: I did, yes.
[00:02:50] Speaker D: Well done.
[00:02:50] Speaker B: What's your title?
[00:02:53] Speaker A: And next we have Executive Director. Executive director. I usually go with supreme High Commander. And it covers all.
[00:03:00] Speaker D: And that works too. It's always good to be here.
[00:03:03] Speaker C: Someone's got to be in charge.
[00:03:04] Speaker A: And also as a returning guest.
[00:03:06] Speaker B: Correct.
[00:03:07] Speaker A: One of the early Stan and Shen podcast guests.
His second time. Long time.
[00:03:13] Speaker D: That's right.
[00:03:14] Speaker B: You can book us today for next year's soup stream. Just.
[00:03:17] Speaker A: We're in. We're in.
And then for the first time, our county legislator.
I know you as Rich.
[00:03:25] Speaker C: So we go.
[00:03:26] Speaker A: Richard. Were we formal to this where we.
[00:03:28] Speaker C: Rich or Richard is fine.
[00:03:29] Speaker A: Rich Russo.
[00:03:30] Speaker C: And first time. First time podcaster, too.
[00:03:33] Speaker A: Really?
[00:03:34] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah.
[00:03:35] Speaker B: Earning you stripes here.
[00:03:37] Speaker C: Okay. Never.
[00:03:37] Speaker A: All right. Everything else will not measure up to this. I can. If I can assure you of that. You're like, wow, this is so different from the first one I did. You guys got it down.
So we're like all of us, we're a work in process.
But we're here to talk Summer night.
[00:03:55] Speaker B: Yes. Yes, we are.
[00:03:57] Speaker A: I cannot tell you what a great Monday has been.
Not only do we have these two people in the podcast studio, the podcast co host is here with Raven hair. I'm going to say thank you.
[00:04:11] Speaker B: I watched it.
[00:04:12] Speaker A: This happens every time I mentioned to one of my co workers. I'm like, the hair looks great today. I washed it. I'm like, why did I say it?
[00:04:21] Speaker B: I did nothing with it.
[00:04:22] Speaker A: I don't know why, but it did look good. But I have just left recording the Tell Me youe Story podcast with the Sydney Wordley, who will open.
[00:04:33] Speaker D: Oh, yeah, we're gonna see her on Friday.
[00:04:34] Speaker A: Summer night.
[00:04:35] Speaker C: Fantastic.
[00:04:36] Speaker A: And she was a joy.
And much to my chagrin, she's 22 years old.
[00:04:44] Speaker C: Yeah, talent comes early.
[00:04:45] Speaker D: She's a dynamo. She is fantastic.
[00:04:48] Speaker A: Third album. Wow. Her first album came out. She put out her first album. She was 15.
I'm like, okay. I've not succeeded in anything in my decades on this planet.
But she was absolutely wonderful.
And we were able to catch up with her and find a nice place down in Albany. So we were at Apologies. Discover Albany.
Amy Sonder was able to find us a conference spot and a quiet spot. And so we were much appreciative.
But Sydney will be on. She'll be in the paper on Thursday, probably in Nippertown. And also the podcast will be up and talking about her career and talking about Freedom Park. And on the podcast, I arranged next year's Bell Nun on Broadway. I already got it done. Sidney Worthley's gonna open Bella Nun on Broadway.
[00:05:37] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:05:37] Speaker A: And then Dirty Honey is going to be the headliner. So we're going to go to local.
[00:05:41] Speaker B: This is not, this is not actually.
We don't know if this is actually happening, but we are pushing.
[00:05:46] Speaker D: It's very impressive how much you're able to check off in a single day.
[00:05:50] Speaker A: It's. We're just, we're putting it out in the atmosphere and hoping everyone will follow. Yes, we're manifesting as if we're really.
[00:05:57] Speaker B: Hoping we could get Dirty Honey just because they are on tour and one of the band members, Fathers, happens to.
[00:06:05] Speaker A: Work for the Daily Gazette, so happens to be a Stan fan. I interviewed the front man.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: Well, first of all, he started off as a Shed fan. Well, he just give me a free.
[00:06:15] Speaker A: But I'm, I'm saying Mark Lebel, I interviewed when he played youth hockey at Cliff.
[00:06:19] Speaker B: He'll love features.
[00:06:20] Speaker A: I'm way back in the Wayback Machine. So that's our kind of. We're. We started with Barenaked Ladies and then we're. Now we want it all local. Last one. Let's do it.
But we've got summer night, which kicks off local guaranteed this Friday.
So just for you, Rich, what's summer night mean to the city of Schenectady? To Schenectady county, from your view and being the vice chair.
[00:06:50] Speaker C: Yeah, vice chair.
I'm the vice chair of tourism. I'm the deputy chair of the legislature. And summer night, in its 19th year now of celebrating all the great things that the city of Schenectady and the county of Schenectady have to offer.
The region is just a tremendous outpouring of coming together, having a great time, whether that be, you know, all of our food vendors, our primary sponsors, MVP will be here with Kid Zone, which is a huge draw.
We always do sandcastle. You. You asked about the National Guard push ups or the Marine Corps pull ups.
There'll be a second pull up. Right. It's just an outpouring of thousands of people coming to downtown Schenectady where they can literally we close from Broadway to not Terrace down, and the entire downtown is free to roam.
And so thousands upon thousands of People will be with us. Starting Friday night at 4 o', clock, the festivities kick off.
And they'll go till the, you know, 10ish o' clock at night for you, culminate with some fireworks. Is that gonna be too late?
[00:08:06] Speaker B: No. Do we need to change the schedule last week? Okay, well, not last week, but the week before that for Independence Day.
[00:08:12] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:08:13] Speaker B: Yeah. Remember.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: All right.
[00:08:14] Speaker C: Okay, so live music, food trucks, purveyors, all the downtown hospitality partners that are there. Right. Grano and Johnny's and Ember and Cork and the Nest and Mila's. Right. Everybody will be open, enjoying all that we have to offer in Schenectady County. And it's just one of many events that we put on throughout the year. This is one of the big ones and we've got some others that are coming up too, like the holiday parade or we've got pedal paddle run, which is usually in the spring. It's usually our first event. We had some weather impacts this year, so we've moved that.
Another great event that's gaining traction is the run the Runway, which is our 5k audits. Connecticut County Airport. A lot of fun. We've gone from, you know, a few runners to a few hundred runners to probably going to be a lot more than that this year. So this is just another example of Schenectady county coming together and celebrating all that's great about Live Stay Play here in Schenectady.
[00:09:16] Speaker B: Well, I was gonna say, so, you know, this draws thousands of people every year. Can you guys put a number to it? I think we have in the past for some of the larger ones, close to like 20, 20,000 people. So essentially you guys are putting on a, you know, hats off to Saratoga for.
That was funny. Hats off. Hats off to Saratoga for, you know, their Belmont on Broadway. But you guys have been doing this for basically 19 years.
[00:09:40] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:09:41] Speaker B: Putting this together. So I mean, you know, Maureen, from your perspective, how important is this for like the downtown. Downtown community too, you know, like that you guys are, you know, he spoke on it a little bit, but you're really able to draw people in. You give, you showcase what downtown look like is what it has to offer.
So, you know, how important is that, you know, from your perspective?
[00:10:06] Speaker D: Yeah. And with, with numbers like this where we're talking about 20,000, 25,000 people coming downtown, we. What a great opportunity to showcase how many amazing things we have going on down here. Let's showcase how beautiful our city really is. Let's showcase all of these restaurants and shops and Businesses that you can't find anywhere else. And for folks who either don't have a lot of opportunities to come downtown or haven't been here in a while, it's a great introduction or reintroduction to the city that'll hopefully get them coming back over and over again when they see how vibrant our community really is.
[00:10:44] Speaker B: So for each of you, what's the thing you're looking forward to most?
[00:10:48] Speaker D: So I know for myself, my kids are obsessed with the Kid Zone.
It's such a fun thing if you are a parent because you get to have fun as an adult. But there's so many activities for children and everything is provided. So all around City hall is the Kid Zone.
And there's face painters and rock climbing walls and, you know, challenges and games and things that for years have just been a joy for parents to come and let their kids explore and have fun and really be a kid. But as an adult, it's fun also. You get to just enjoy the evening, be hearing the live music, touring around and getting treats from some of the favorite spots that you know are gonna be home runs every single time.
And get to just sort of wander through and check them all out all at once.
[00:11:42] Speaker C: Yeah, that's exactly right. You know, we have. My wife and I, my wife Bernice and I have seven grandchildren. Now, four of them are old enough to come down to the Kid Zone, and so we're looking forward to bringing them. But for me, being in the atmosphere where there's 15 or 20,000 people and you've got some of the, you know, the hit makers from yesterday or this year with the lords of 52nd street and who else is it? Philadelphia, Freedom coming.
When you're in a crowd where there's 10,000 people all singing the same lyric, that's so cool. Right? That's just. There's an enjoyment about that where, you know, you're all lifted up. Right. Cause you're all sharing in that same moment and you're all sharing in that unity, if you will, of like, wow, this is fun. I'm glad I'm here. I'm glad I'm with the person next to me. And we're experiencing the same thing. So.
[00:12:41] Speaker A: So how does it work out for you? Because we're kind of across the table here. So for you and I, when Sydney Wordley takes the stage and she's going to do a combination, she's going to do some of her original stuff, some great original stuff. I listened to her for the past two days, but when she's doing the Taylor Swift hits, the upbeat stuff. Are you there? Are you a little lost? Because I know the women in the room are there and locked in.
[00:13:07] Speaker C: You know, I'm there to just pick up on the energy. Right. So I just want to be there and enjoy. It's great to watch talent on stage. It's great to watch performance, and it's great to, you know, if I'm on stage, like I was at fourth on the third, there's 1,000 people looking at you. Right. And that's. There is an elixir to that. Right. And I can't imagine being a great talent like Sydney and really being able to entertain.
You know, I'm there for the comedic moment, you know, for a second to put a little energy into the crowd. But when you really can entertain, when you really can make music and people really can come into that, into that vibration, if you will, almost, that moves. That moves people. Right? That moves mountains.
[00:13:55] Speaker B: Well, Stan can't make music, but does have dad jokes.
[00:14:00] Speaker A: Okay, I'm there.
[00:14:02] Speaker C: He's got a full book, I heard.
[00:14:04] Speaker A: Yeah, it's.
[00:14:05] Speaker B: It's, as we all learned, legendary.
[00:14:08] Speaker A: Legendary. So, Maureen, I had the opportunity to talk to Liberty DeVito, drummer for Lords of 52nd, heading into this, and I've got some of the guys from some of the members of Philadelphia Freedom coming up also.
So I'm talking to Liberty, and he's a New York guy, so he's one of three of the original session guys that played with Billy Joel.
[00:14:29] Speaker C: Yeah, there's real DNA there.
[00:14:31] Speaker A: Yeah. And they played on 23 of his 24 top 40 hits. The three, the saxophone, Liberty on drums, and I think guitarist.
So I'm talking to Liberty and Liberty saying to me, what was Harbor Jam like? What's it like to play, you know, summer night? And Liberty automatically goes, you know, it's going to be awesome. I can just go over to Johnny's and I can get some food there, and then I'm going down the bakery to see Bobby.
What's. I mean, what kind of juice is that for Schenectady? When it's like these people who tour the nation now a little bit older, but they know the area. They've been here already for Harbor Jam.
[00:15:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:15:11] Speaker A: You know, and they're coming back and they're psyched.
What's that juice? What's that message like when you're talking to other businesses? What's the feedback you're getting from the people that are gonna be part of that swath of people?
[00:15:23] Speaker D: Yeah. And this is Part of what Schenectady county does so well is create these connections and these partnerships where things aren't just a drop in the bucket where you're coming in, going out, and it's done. It's creating a whole vibe where everyone is involved, whether you live here or you're visiting here, whether you have a business here and it's a big day, or you're stopping in to check something out for the first time.
It's really an all inclusive thing that is. Is infectious.
You get swept up in what a community Schenectady really is. And for as much as the county covers and as much as we have going on downtown, it's really a community. And everyone works together and feeds off of each other in a way that just makes people want to come back over and over again.
[00:16:16] Speaker C: Yeah, that's great. That's great.
[00:16:17] Speaker A: All right, we got the tough one.
Hold on.
[00:16:20] Speaker C: Okay. Oh, yes. There's DNA there that goes back a long way. Think about when Jack Nicholson was here to film.
It was something in Troy. Gotta be 40 plus years ago. And he went to Pareca's and he got their Italian bread, and forevermore, they were sending Pareca's bread to wherever he was on a movie set around the country. So I think Schenectady has this magic about it, whether it's our hospitality partners or our neighborhoods or the innovation that we've brought. Right. The city that lights and halls. That's true. Right. We changed history in terms of some of the things that we've done in this community. Right.
And I really think that's an important thing that always have to kind of come back to and remember who we are and what we've accomplished.
I'm proud of that.
[00:17:11] Speaker A: And we had Kathy Gotta on last week, and I think we were pitching Music City for, you know, Schenectady, just because everything we've got going on throughout the county, from Freedom park to Music Haven to Summer Night to bands on Broadway to.
I mean, we're the city that brings the tunes right now. I mean, I mean, as much as Saratoga has it, with SPAC and the national acts coming in and the orchestra and the ballet and some of the great cultural things there. I mean, we're jamming almost every night, you know. You know, you almost walk a couple blocks and you've got a song in your head.
[00:17:45] Speaker C: Well, and there's a collaboration here, right? Whether it's between Schenectady county and DSIC or Discover Schenectady and discover Albany or SPAC bringing thousands of people to the region, but then they discover the other locations around the capital region. Schenectady is first on that list now. Right. It's not just come to Saratoga and go to wherever you came from. Schenectady is a destination unto itself, and we're proud of that.
[00:18:13] Speaker A: How hard is this to put? How hard is. You've done it 19 times, so in theory, it should get a little easier. You know, it's like I always equate it to putting up a ceiling fan. By the third one, you're an expert.
[00:18:24] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:18:25] Speaker A: Because the first two are going to fall.
So 19, does it get easier or does the checklist get checked off faster?
[00:18:34] Speaker C: You know, so I'll start and say that Jason Lacquey is our special events coordinator. Has been with us since 2016. Does an amazing job along with the entire county legislature, the staff of the county legislature. Right. That's an all hands project. An all hands event. Right. From facilities to the coordination with law enforcement to everyone is involved. And they start planning the minute the street sweepers and the cleanup is done on Friday night, Saturday morning, take the breath on Monday, start thinking about next year.
It's an entire year process with a lot of moving parts, and we couldn't do it without great partners like DSIC and the city of Schenectady.
[00:19:16] Speaker D: And here's where it gets to be in fine tuning mode, because the more you do it, the easier certain elements get and you can start to really zero in on things that could always be a little bit better. Always be a new opportunity. Oh, here's a new idea that we had that we didn't have time to implement this year.
Let's do it this year and keep improving on things that no one else noticed but are always great ways to showcase what we've got going on.
[00:19:43] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:19:44] Speaker B: Anything new this year or anything you want to highlight a little bit more this year that you're bringing back again?
[00:19:53] Speaker D: I think one of the really fun things has been that connection between different zones. So I already talked about the MVP kids zone. That's all around city hall.
Of course, the showcase is right on State street where there's all of the food vendors and the stages for the music. But all along the J Street Marketplace, that corridor, that pedestrian corridor there, there are all sorts of vendors planned for this year also. And that's been really fun to see develop because it connects all of the different elements so beautifully. It still highlights the brick and mortar businesses that we have there, but it brings elements to the downtown that are so unique. For the day and just add extra fun, extra oomph to an already ecstatic and wonderful vibe.
[00:20:45] Speaker A: All right, what do you got? Who are you looking forward to most?
[00:20:48] Speaker C: I'll start with the lady. Okay.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: Who are you looking forward to most on. On the three acts?
[00:20:53] Speaker D: Oh, you know what? I like anything that I can obnoxiously sing along to and just live my best life out, you know, in front of the stage. I have to say, I have a real soft spot for Sydney. She played our end of summer celebration last year and blew me away. And so I'm really looking forward to seeing her again, but, boy, am I going to have my dancing shoes on for all of the acts throughout the night.
[00:21:22] Speaker A: How about for you, Rich?
[00:21:23] Speaker C: Yeah. You know, local talent aside, what a tremendous opportunity we have to showcase local talent on both the main stage and the secondary stage and throughout the entire event. But if I can sing Crocodile Rock or Benny and the jets or, you know, so love Elton John.
Love that energy that that performer brought to the world stage and Philadelphia Freedom kind of mimics that. Not kind of. They mimic it, and they do a great job at it, taking nothing away from the original members of Billy Joel's group.
I just know all the lyrics to Elton John's song, so can't wait for that. Do you know any of these songs?
[00:22:05] Speaker B: I know Betty. Legit's okay.
It was in 27 dresses. Come on, everybody.
[00:22:12] Speaker D: That's the obvious connection, you know, that's okay.
[00:22:14] Speaker C: Wherever you get it from. Right?
[00:22:16] Speaker B: It's on one of my playlists for the gym, I think. It's on my walking playlist, my cardio playlist.
[00:22:20] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:22:21] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:21] Speaker A: All right.
[00:22:22] Speaker B: Yeah. I'd play it now, but we probably get sued.
[00:22:24] Speaker A: Yes. Yeah, we don't. We didn't. We don't have that in the budget.
Like many things. Yeah, we don't have in the budget. The.
[00:22:31] Speaker C: It was talking.
[00:22:32] Speaker A: Talking to Liberty. I said I was joking around with him. I said, I don't think there's an adult who hasn't closed a bar belting out Piano Man.
[00:22:39] Speaker C: Absolutely right.
[00:22:41] Speaker D: Absolutely.
[00:22:42] Speaker C: So hold on, raise my hand and say, I always wanted to learn how to play the piano so that you could walk into someone's parlor and play that.
And so everybody would stop and go, oh, that's really cool. Right? That's the song. That's it.
[00:22:57] Speaker A: One song. It's the only thing you'd play.
[00:22:58] Speaker C: That's it. That's all you gotta do.
[00:22:59] Speaker A: It's like Chopsticks and Piano Man. It's the only two Things I can play. And you're still a legend.
[00:23:04] Speaker C: That's it.
[00:23:05] Speaker A: If you pull that off, do some shenanigans.
[00:23:09] Speaker B: Sure.
[00:23:11] Speaker A: Part of the enjoyment of coming to the Stand and Shen Paul podcast is we now call it Shenanigans where we ask those great questions, those mind bending questions of our guests. And we've honed this since you were here. So I'm excited. She's very excited. But we'll break in the rookie here.
[00:23:28] Speaker D: Thanks.
[00:23:30] Speaker A: This is one of Chen's favorites. We talk about the Stewart's flight.
So Stewart's now has the banana split container.
[00:23:41] Speaker C: Okay. Okay. And Stuart's Flight.
[00:23:44] Speaker A: Stuart's flight.
[00:23:44] Speaker C: Okay. All right.
[00:23:45] Speaker A: So like beer and wine, you have a choice. So you have three different scoops of ice cream in that container. Yeah, the banana boat per se, as we grew up calling it from Carvel and stuff. So what are your three flavors for your Stewart's Flight?
[00:23:59] Speaker C: Oh, boy. So I'm a cookie dough guy for sure.
And then I'm. What is it?
Crumbs along the Mohawk and there's a dark fudge chocolate double fudge. Something that also has like cooked. What is it? Death by Death by chocolate. It has whatever has a cookie crumb or a caramel crumb or something like that. That's my, that's my go to.
[00:24:24] Speaker B: You know, as someone who loves chocolate, the death by chocolate's too much for me.
[00:24:28] Speaker C: Oh, wow.
[00:24:28] Speaker D: No such thing.
[00:24:30] Speaker B: Sometimes I'll eat the whole container and then at the end I'm kind of like, oh, I wish I didn't. I didn't do that.
[00:24:36] Speaker C: But yet you do it again.
[00:24:38] Speaker B: But I would probably do it again. Yeah.
[00:24:40] Speaker A: How about for you, Maureen? What's your flight?
[00:24:43] Speaker D: The easiest one is peanut butter Pandemonium.
That's an obvious. They have during the holiday season. There's a peppermint that's different than the mint chip. They have a peppermint one that comes out around the holidays that if it was offered all year round, I would have it all year round. It is the best for a shake.
Ooh, a third one, I would maybe have to say the dark cherry one.
Dark cherry chip, I think it is.
[00:25:09] Speaker C: Okay. All very unique flavors.
[00:25:12] Speaker D: They were necessarily pedestrian.
[00:25:14] Speaker A: Okay. So we'll stay with you, Maureen, and we'll go through the pain. That was selecting your top four albums.
Of course. My co host gave me four Taylor Swift albums. I had to listen to two of them. One of them was Midnight, the Dawn edition. And so I want my Saturday back. Well, it was Midnights, Midnights and then at least Sunday was. Was reputation. So that. That saved the weekend there.
I gave her.
[00:25:39] Speaker B: He says it like that. Midnights was a great album.
[00:25:42] Speaker A: And I. I gave her Van Halen's 5150. I'm a big Van Hagar fan. Okay. And then also joint venture. My wife and I gave her the Carpenter's greatest hits.
[00:25:53] Speaker D: Love the Carpenter.
[00:25:54] Speaker A: And the reason is, is that my wife and I feel that every young woman needs to know those songs because at some point in their life.
So relatable very early for her. But through the years, there's going to be a rainy day and Monday that really hits or, you know, close to you is going to hit. So what's your top four albums?
[00:26:14] Speaker D: Oh, I am one of those oddballs who. I will know every word of a song and not be able to tell you who sings it or what it's called.
[00:26:24] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:26:24] Speaker D: So coming up with an album is very tough for me. I'm also a big show tunes person. That's cool. So I go through shows a lot.
[00:26:33] Speaker A: Okay.
Throw them out there.
[00:26:35] Speaker C: What's.
[00:26:36] Speaker D: I would say for regular, at least songs. I have a couple that I always go back to.
Absolute favorite song is King of Wishful Thinking by Go West.
[00:26:47] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:26:49] Speaker D: That one I could jam to all the time. I'm a big Eve 6 fan, which is very unrelated.
I kind of go all over the place. I'm not sure I could come up with four albums. That's a really hard question.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: That's why we bring the challenges of the stand and Shenzhen. It's not all just fun and games.
This is like heavy lifting.
[00:27:08] Speaker C: Serious.
[00:27:09] Speaker D: I gave you one song and one artist. Neither. Neither one is an album.
[00:27:12] Speaker A: Yeah, you're a politician. You. We asked you a question and that's what you gave us back. So you're ready.
[00:27:17] Speaker D: I deflected all over.
[00:27:18] Speaker A: Yeah, you're ready. You're ready. We'll just run a primary and the, you know, the DSIC line and there you go. We'll check it. How about. How about you had some time, Rich, so you got to bring it.
[00:27:28] Speaker C: And my brain was. I did get a. I had start there because, you know, put me on the spot like that. Now I have a musical. My musical leanings cover all genres. Right. Whether they be symphonic. Right. Bolero, Ravel or the Beatles, you know, Rubber Soul or Led Zeppelin. Physically. Physical graffiti. Right.
I'm a huge rush fan, so 2112 would be, you know, one of those albums. And then Allison Krauss and Union Station make amazing music where he's like, yes. So, yes, that's. I can cross all those boundaries.
[00:28:07] Speaker A: So for those of us in the room that are hair impaired, myself and rich.
[00:28:11] Speaker C: Yes.
[00:28:12] Speaker A: Over July 4th week, and they always do the best of and things like that. I just. A shout out on SiriusXM Classic Rewind played 40 cassettes that were turning 40.
[00:28:22] Speaker C: Oh, wow.
[00:28:23] Speaker A: So they had the original VJ on and with some of the artists, and then they would play two songs off the cassette.
[00:28:29] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:28:29] Speaker A: And that was a blast.
And that was a blast. So my interesting factoid of the day that will be missed on the young lady to my left is that when Dan Forte was writing the album Center Field, the album name was always going to be Center Field.
He didn't have a song that had center field on it until the very end.
He was pushed then the record coming, you.
Center Field is the name of the album. We have nothing that says Center Field on it. There's not a single lyric that says center field. He's like, oh, geez. And he, like, pulled out some old guitar creation thing, and that was that twangy beginning that brought us into Center Field and. And one of the greatest movies of all time, Bull Durham and.
[00:29:15] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:29:16] Speaker A: And things like that. So that was my fun fact for the weekend. So this is the. This is the exposing yourself portion of Shenanigans.
It's a very intelligent question.
[00:29:25] Speaker C: Sounds dangerous.
[00:29:26] Speaker A: And Shin's like going, which one is. What's he talking about? 4 people you like to have live or dead.
[00:29:32] Speaker C: Oh, wow.
[00:29:34] Speaker A: Alive or dead.
[00:29:35] Speaker B: This is too much thinking for a Monday.
[00:29:37] Speaker D: I know.
[00:29:38] Speaker A: We're having a great Monday.
[00:29:39] Speaker B: Remember, I only had three.
[00:29:41] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:29:42] Speaker B: I couldn't come up with my fourth.
I can only remember two.
[00:29:48] Speaker C: You know, they say always be curious. Right. And always, you know, look to surround yourself with people who can bring some nuance or some inflection that you would have no perspective on.
And I was at a conference not too long ago in Hawaii. Beautiful place to have a conference. And Deepak Chopra was there.
And this individual spoke on a plane that was, I don't know, 10 magnitudes higher than, you know, he talked about, you know, between here and there. And this is where you are. And it was very ethereal.
Be an interesting person to have at dinner. I'd love to really try to unpack what he's trying to say.
[00:30:35] Speaker A: Gotcha.
[00:30:35] Speaker C: So that's one.
[00:30:37] Speaker D: Yeah. I think one of mine would probably be Arthur Miller.
[00:30:41] Speaker B: Playwright, great.
[00:30:42] Speaker C: Playwright, poet, great.
[00:30:44] Speaker D: Love his stuff.
That might be one of mine. Just because his personal life story and his Written stories don't always match up. And so I feel like there's probably a lot to him.
[00:30:57] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:30:58] Speaker B: Perhaps my two that I can remember. I forgot what the third was.
Were Taylor Swift, of course, and Surprise Face and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
[00:31:09] Speaker A: Rbg.
[00:31:09] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:31:10] Speaker D: It's a good one.
[00:31:11] Speaker B: A solid table to sit at.
[00:31:12] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:31:14] Speaker A: My was Hunter S. Thompson, but we had to have a hefty security deposit on the room.
[00:31:18] Speaker C: Okay.
Because he tends to go a little crazy.
[00:31:21] Speaker A: So that was, you know, something like that.
And then, you know, I leaned into it and, you know, Barack Obama.
[00:31:30] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:31:30] Speaker A: Because Rita wanted to invite Michelle.
[00:31:32] Speaker C: Amazing.
[00:31:32] Speaker A: So it had to be a family gathering, so it'd be Michelle and Barack and rgb, and we'd save Hunter to, you know, crash the party later.
[00:31:41] Speaker C: I always thought Tom Hanks would be an interesting person to be with.
[00:31:45] Speaker A: Everything I've read, just the nicest man.
[00:31:48] Speaker C: He's, you know, again, if you're a great actor, you're believable at every role that you play. But I think for me, and I'm sure many others, I believe in him. Whatever story he's telling, I absolutely believe in that story.
And I think that has everything to do with who he is as an individual, as he conveys. And he's obviously great at his craft, but I think he'd be that person.
[00:32:13] Speaker A: For ZL and along with his wife.
[00:32:15] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:32:16] Speaker A: Rita Wilson.
[00:32:17] Speaker C: Amazing.
[00:32:17] Speaker A: I mean, why not have, you know, Michelle and Barack and Tom and Rita. I think that's a great force.
[00:32:23] Speaker D: If you can invite guests that have their own plus one, you can, like, really fill out this dinner.
[00:32:30] Speaker A: I mean, this is a good one.
[00:32:32] Speaker B: Robin Williams.
Robin Williams. I love to have him at my table.
[00:32:36] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:32:37] Speaker A: Oh. Would not be a dry eye or painfully laugh.
[00:32:43] Speaker B: And I would love it if he came in as Mrs. Doubtfire to start the dinner.
[00:32:50] Speaker A: We all do that.
But speaking of gone and Ms. George Carlin.
[00:32:55] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:32:56] Speaker A: Which is what I grew up. So that goes into the next question. Is George Carlin was my first concert experience.
[00:33:03] Speaker C: Yeah. Really?
[00:33:04] Speaker A: Yeah. I was 13.
[00:33:05] Speaker D: Vocabulary left.
[00:33:06] Speaker A: Yes. I was 13.
[00:33:07] Speaker C: The eight words. Yeah.
[00:33:10] Speaker A: My father, like, reached new highs. Brought myself, my younger cousin. My older cousin. And this is at the Forum back in Vancouver, New York. The three of us. And my father played.
I mean, talk about a record that you wear out. My father wore out that record and just loved, you know, as we get older. And Shen will point this out, telling the same stories over and over again. So first concert.
[00:33:35] Speaker D: My first concert that I remember going to with my family was Tommy Maycomb and the Clancy Brothers.
We always listen to Proud to Be Irish every weekend. And so we were a big Celtic music family.
But the first one that I chose that I wanted to go to was Whitney Houston.
And it was a heck of a show. She went on super late, which, you know, in my teenage brain was amazing.
Yes. So cool.
But it was a heck of a show, I will tell you.
[00:34:09] Speaker A: How about viewers?
[00:34:10] Speaker C: My parents let me go with a cousin to REO Speedwagon. I think it was 1983 or 84. I was, I don't know, 14, 13 or 14 in the car. You know, have fun, see ya. Down the road we went. I don't remember the things we did, but I was a young person on the lawn at Spack going, this is amazing. Yeah, yeah. And, yeah, that was my first concert.
[00:34:39] Speaker A: What was your first concert?
[00:34:41] Speaker B: So my family, every year, this is a fun story, would take us to the New York State Fairgrounds. And if you remember, there was one. One band in particular that played every year, Joan Jett. That was my first one as our family that I can remember.
[00:34:54] Speaker C: It's a good one.
[00:34:55] Speaker B: My first one didn't come till college. And our college, in an effort to get people from doing the Bridge Street Run, which was where you went down and you went up to all the bars and you had everybody sign your T shirt. We had some issues the year before. So in order to get people to stop doing that, they brought in. The first year was the big guns. They brought in Big Sean, Mac Miller, and B O B. And that was my first concert, which was wild because apparently Mac Miller did some stuff after the concert that cannot be talked about on a podcast.
And Bob threw out gold chains.
Like, yeah, he was just giving out gold chains to people in the crowd. And it was actually not that big of a concert given such big names. Like, I was right there on the floor, which was the Ice Arena. You're right there on the Ice Arena. I was probably seven people from the stage, and there was, like, nobody else there because it was such. It was one of those moments where, like, all the college was trying to do was prevent people from going downtown, which it did not do. It has, I think, fueled it. I think it's gotten smaller over the years.
But, yeah, they really spent a lot of money that first year to try and prevent something that they did not prevent.
I did end up going out afterward. I went to the concert, still went out.
[00:36:08] Speaker A: So this is where we should run video, because this is where Shen, like, does. Does the lab head tilt.
Because the age difference.
So she goes.
[00:36:19] Speaker C: She goes.
[00:36:20] Speaker A: Huh? Who in the head tilt like she has to start googling stuff. So for me it was a Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Of course we have the longest name for. For Broome county storied arena and but happy to report making a return trip to the Albany area Blue Easter Cult. Oh wow.
[00:36:40] Speaker C: I've heard of saw them in Glens falls in like 84, 85.
[00:36:43] Speaker A: Yeah. My first concert.
[00:36:44] Speaker C: The Reaper.
[00:36:45] Speaker A: Yep. Absolutely. It was I am one of my top album. It didn't make my top four but it was so close. Is Fire of Unknown Origin.
[00:36:53] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:36:53] Speaker A: Which everyone's got to Google and they're like what's Stan talking about? But it's like one of the greatest like non listened to albums out there. There's so many great songs on there.
[00:37:02] Speaker C: Yeah.
Missed is album covers. Right. You know you don't see that art anymore. Right.
[00:37:08] Speaker A: Album cover story from the archives. Back when there were albums. She doesn't know records. Remember records. Speaking of which, Tom Hanks top one of my top movies of all time. That thing you do.
[00:37:20] Speaker C: Yes, awesome.
[00:37:21] Speaker A: That thing you do which I don't think you've seen.
I'm trying to get a movie night here at the Gazette. Like Sunday night we play a movie like Almost Famous that those we wouldn't.
[00:37:29] Speaker B: Like each other enough to come back to this office a day before we have to come back.
[00:37:33] Speaker C: There'd be food could get it out.
[00:37:37] Speaker B: Are there going to be cupcakes?
[00:37:38] Speaker A: I will bring cupcakes. If we. If you agree to a movie night. I will make cupcakes for movie night.
But you have to watch the movie at the end.
[00:37:46] Speaker D: Good one.
[00:37:47] Speaker B: Are you picking the movie by poll?
[00:37:51] Speaker A: This is by committee.
[00:37:52] Speaker B: Who's on said committee?
[00:37:54] Speaker A: Rita.
[00:37:55] Speaker B: I don't know how I feel.
[00:37:56] Speaker A: Me and Rita, we've seen a lot of movies.
[00:37:58] Speaker C: Rita and I say, you know it is thanks.
[00:38:02] Speaker A: And she's gonna kill herself right here. There we go.
But. But that thing you do speaking of you know a record. A record record record.
Rita and I quote it all the time. We just love that movie. Tony Kornheiser, hopefully soon to be friend of the podcast. Probably not. But he talks about that's one of his favorite movies of all time. But talking about the record.
100 years ago there was Crazy Eddie. You know which for those of us that are old enough now was New York. So in New Jersey there was the counterpart competitor was called Wall to wall sound and Video.
[00:38:35] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:38:35] Speaker A: Or Wall to Wall Sound. So that's where the hooties work together and somehow still remained close enough to them be married.
Poison came out with look what the cat dragged in. And this is during the Moral Majority.
The album cover got pulled because it had the female demon with the forked tongue on it. Basically, it's. Fast forward to Avatar is pretty much close, but it was green versus blue.
The album got pulled because of the album cover because they thought it was too graphic and would scare children. Yeah. And so I remember pulling the album and everybody in the store buying it before, so we couldn't send it back. We're like, this is gonna be worth a thousand dollars.
[00:39:20] Speaker C: We got it.
[00:39:20] Speaker A: So like we were buying it like an album for like nine bucks or something.
[00:39:23] Speaker C: So innocent.
[00:39:24] Speaker A: We were. Yeah, it's. I think you still get the album for 10 bucks. But that was like album covers and album jackets and liners and all those things that are lost. And now it's available on the web.
[00:39:33] Speaker C: You talked about George Carlin earlier, right? And the, you know, the seven words.
[00:39:37] Speaker A: You can't say on TV or Shen can't say on the podcast. That's why we have a beep now.
[00:39:41] Speaker C: And the whole risk.
Oh, we're on a delay. Are we on a delay here?
[00:39:46] Speaker A: Well, no, there's a beep.
[00:39:47] Speaker C: Okay.
So the risqueness, that was the 70s or 80s, right. The moral high ground seems to have eroded substantially.
[00:39:57] Speaker B: I just want to point out that everyone drops the F bomb. I don't know why we can't still say it on a podcast. Because it's a family friendly show. I'm pretty certain these kids all know what it is. And let me just be very certain here. My father taught this to me as a noun, verb, and adjective, so.
And I turned out just fine for the most part.
[00:40:18] Speaker A: Cherie's still out.
[00:40:19] Speaker C: I mean, she qualified it for the most part.
[00:40:22] Speaker B: And also the. The B word means female dog.
[00:40:25] Speaker A: And you're justifying.
[00:40:28] Speaker B: A is just a donkey.
[00:40:30] Speaker A: And you're justifying. You're justifying every day in the office is what you're doing. Right?
[00:40:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
And an A hole is just someone from Massachusetts.
[00:40:39] Speaker C: Oh, she's here all week, folks. It's.
[00:40:43] Speaker A: Don't get.
[00:40:43] Speaker B: I lived there for six months. I'm allowed to say I know what we're like.
[00:40:46] Speaker C: We have to go back to it's true experience. Yeah.
[00:40:48] Speaker A: And don't say grinder, okay?
[00:40:50] Speaker B: Oh, no, no, no, no.
It's not grinder. It's a wedge. It's a wedge. Don't bring up the.
[00:40:55] Speaker A: The wedge.
[00:40:56] Speaker B: I'm. I'm glad you guys. Thank you. Thank you. Apparently, down in Putnam county, some guy got too tired. He was making too many sandwiches, so he just called it a wedge, which doesn't even make sense because it's.
[00:41:06] Speaker A: Connecticut's a grinder.
[00:41:07] Speaker C: I'm disagreeing with that.
[00:41:08] Speaker A: I was lost for, like, two weeks. I. I almost starved.
You got a sub? He goes, yeah, you got to go to Groton. I'm like, groton? Yeah.
[00:41:18] Speaker C: I'm like, where the submarines are.
[00:41:20] Speaker A: Yeah, that's exactly. I'm like, sub. I'm like, I know. I want to. I want a sandwich.
[00:41:23] Speaker C: I want, like.
[00:41:25] Speaker A: So that's where we're at with that.
[00:41:26] Speaker B: Anyway.
[00:41:27] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:41:28] Speaker A: Yeah, I think we should say the wings, too.
[00:41:29] Speaker B: We. We. We judge one person wholeheartedly in this office for the. For their sandwich. Word choice.
[00:41:35] Speaker A: And pop.
Oh, God.
[00:41:38] Speaker D: Pop.
[00:41:38] Speaker C: I lived in Michigan for a while, and that was. Yeah, that was it.
[00:41:41] Speaker D: I lived in Buffalo, and there were a lot of those.
[00:41:43] Speaker C: Yeah, there's a. There's a. There's a line right as you get close to Ohio, then Midwest, it's pop.
[00:41:48] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:41:48] Speaker C: And sneakers aren't sneakers or tennis shoes.
[00:41:51] Speaker B: Buffalo is the only place we allow that to happen in New York State.
[00:41:54] Speaker A: So we're going to close it out with this.
Who are you going to contact that you may not have yet contacted to get their butt down here for Friday? Who's on your list of, like, who's got to be here? Like, you're worried, like, may. May go, oh, I didn't know. You're like, come on, man. Who you have to tell? Give him a shout out.
[00:42:16] Speaker D: I am really hoping that all of the people who should know already know, but I am actually coordinating a huge group of my friends where we were, like, passing around information for Friday to bring them down, because they're folks who are either big concert goers, they are foodies, they're, you know, crap beverage people, or they're folks like me who have kids. And I'm like, listen, I can. I can flow between all of the groups all day because there is something for all of you here.
I'm. I'm bringing a whole pack.
[00:42:49] Speaker B: All right. Susan, Dan, Jack, and Natasha.
I don't know. Just throw names. Anybody in that friend group, you better be there.
[00:42:58] Speaker D: Yeah.
[00:42:59] Speaker B: Or when we're live, we might call you out.
[00:43:02] Speaker A: Yeah, we'll have a list. We're gonna be going live in a couple times.
[00:43:05] Speaker B: We'll have a list. If you don't stop by the table.
[00:43:07] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:43:08] Speaker D: By your presence.
[00:43:09] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:43:09] Speaker A: Yep, exactly. And pick up A pick up some Stan and Shen swag. We have some stickers. We have some glow sticks.
[00:43:16] Speaker B: Yes. Giving out glow sticks.
[00:43:18] Speaker A: We have glow sticks.
[00:43:18] Speaker D: You know what you should do? You know, we've all been talking about our first concerts and things.
Have people stop by if it's their first concert.
[00:43:26] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:43:27] Speaker A: Yeah, the selfies.
[00:43:28] Speaker D: Get a cool, like, selfie.
[00:43:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:43:30] Speaker D: Or keep a tally of people where it's their first. First concert. Especially because people list. We're gonna show so much going on around here that would be on Facebook live.
[00:43:39] Speaker A: Yeah. We'll invite people. How about for your. Who.
[00:43:41] Speaker C: Who's.
[00:43:41] Speaker A: So who's the stragglers that you got.
[00:43:43] Speaker C: To make sure, like, you talked about swag first. So I brought gifts. Okay. So Schenectady county special events. On behalf of Schenectady county and the special events team, stickers are going in. It's a little, you know, swag bag. Okay. That you can.
Right.
[00:43:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:00] Speaker C: So there you go.
[00:44:00] Speaker A: We're in charge of that.
[00:44:02] Speaker B: I was gonna put sparkles of mine so I can just pull out my thing, pack, and go.
[00:44:06] Speaker C: You can just kind of poof people, Right.
[00:44:08] Speaker D: Have it just packed with confetti.
[00:44:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
Is that a Taylor Swift?
[00:44:13] Speaker A: Just that magic dust you bring everywhere. Now it's gonna be visible.
[00:44:17] Speaker B: Elsa.
[00:44:18] Speaker A: All right, so Rob and Lisa, Helen and Donnie, you better get your butts down here.
[00:44:24] Speaker B: You gotta get his.
[00:44:25] Speaker C: Well, yeah.
[00:44:25] Speaker A: So who's in your list?
[00:44:26] Speaker C: So my job would be to call all of my colleagues who are in other districts. Right. The mayor of Amsterdam, the mayor elect of Albany. Right. All the friends.

[00:46:05] Speaker A: It's an open invitation.
[00:46:06] Speaker B: An aggressive invitation.

[00:46:45] Speaker B: Believe.
[00:46:46] Speaker C: Thank you, guys. For my first time in a podcast, this was easy. It was fun. I like being in a padded room. I'm not sure if that's a bigger statement on my. On my mindset, but this was great.
It just went in and as Maureen said, please.

It's better than ever. Can't wait for this coming Friday.

[00:47:30] Speaker A: There's day passes available for Shannon, so that's how work gets done.
[00:47:34] Speaker B: But we will be down there on Friday. Come find our table. I have no idea where it's that currently we're just showing up to do the work and have some fun. So we'll have.
